dude ... the space between the metal stuff is called fret .. and even the metal stuff is called fret ....
The term is used interchangably .... So when they say the frets are rusted .. it means the metal .. when they say fret 3 rd fret ... it mean u have to hold the space b/t the 2nd metal line and the third metal line ....

    death_metal_fan oh goody, it's a woody!

Actually that is a common misconception. A fret is a metal strip on the fingerboard. But nowadays it is common to use the noun fret as a verb i.e. 'to fret' meaning 'hold the string down behind the fret'. Therefore many guitarists have now come to refer to the space between the metal strips as a fret.

^^ yep thats what i said but when u c people in some articles saying that place finger on 3rd fret so it has to b the space 2rd n 3rd metal fret space n they r not refering to the metal thing....

this depends on whether u consider the initial fret or nut as a fret or not i always use that to b the fret number 1 or zero

the nut is usually considered to be fret number zero on the fretboard but i have the bad habit of considering it as the first fret

anyways i edited that part (sorry u may c me posting that again coz i have this bad habit lol) :p: : :rule:

    another query ... plz sort

So finally shud i conclude tht its the space b/w those lines?

Also another thing i wanna ask is tht is a string at a fret to b pressed wid such a force tht it touches two adjacent lines corresponding 2 tht particular fret or is it 2 be pressed wid a lesser force... but in tht case i get a muffled tone..
ironically i read somewhere tht pressing d strings wid a greater force cud lead 2 a muflled tone.
    Any answers??

    Frets are the metallic lines.

Finger on 1st fret means finger on the space betn the first metallic line and the plastic nut.....u dont keep the finger on the metallic line because it produces a muted sound

yep i sorted the confusion out in the previous post thnx for reminding me of my err(damn am not perfect)

    ok for the garry quest

press it in a way that it touches the fretboard n when u pick the sting a clear sound is heard

at first u will hear ping prick ping ie uneven sounds n ur finger may hurt coz u r a newbie but keep on trying

ur finger will eventually not hurt
maY b the outer layer of ur skin will b damaged but as u will play more a thick layer will replace the damaged layer n there wont b any ouch it hurt feeling ;)

ok more info the rest will add

@ mr singh good luck 4 ur xams

    it gcse??
i had mine in 2004 n did really well

good luck to u too garry for ur start with the guitar world

    so we can say that,,

dude read my previous post.....frets are the lines...the spaces are called frets as a result of a misconception

u press the strings between the lines (in the spaces) and not the line....otherwise it produces crappy muted sounds

    its like

    Code:
    nut 1 2 3
    |----------|----------|----0-----|
    |----------|----------|----0-----|
    |----------|----------|----0-----|
    |----------|----------|----0-----|
    |----------|----------|----0-----|
    |----------|----------|----0-----|

in the above figure.....the nos 1,2 and 3 are frets (metallin lines)
wen u press the strings marked 0 u can say u are pressing the 3rd fret....
