And personally i feel they are the stepping stone towards getting into the deeper sub-genres of metal.

Well..now reorienting the thread back to what it was created for...i believe metallica is little too overrated...i dont really go ga-ga over their music..but undoubtedly some songs do deserve a praise..like: fade to black+sanitarium+st. anger+nothing else matters+One+call of ktulu.....these happen to be my only faves....

I can say the same for country music, folk music, bollywood music, countless other genres.
BUT I DON'T, That is because I dont know much about those genres.

Metallica is THE reason (ok add Megadeth etc too) why most of the ppl start listening to Metal music.
You cannot discount their contribution by calling them overrated.
