Hi, your strumming depends on how comfortably you are holding your guitar. always rest inside of your elbow on the side of the guitar. Remember that not to move your arm while strumming, only your wrist dhould move.I hope you know how to hold the pick. Initially you should start with a loose grip and as you progress you will have to hold the pick tightly to get sharp sound. Upstrokes might be easy at first. try to strum lightly like brushing over the strings. Actually I do both flatpicking as well as fingerpicking but I mostly use my fingers because I play classical and flemenco. Do not get disappointed if you take time, you should also try fingerpicking, but for that you will have to have longer nails on your picking hand. If you have any difficulty ask me again.
