I think the posters above me should actually answer the question rather than question his reasons for wanting to play guitar.

@mammon: You could learn to play popular songs (which also works extremely well for parties) like Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits), Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton), More Than Words (Extreme) etc.

Also try learning popular Hindi classics like Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh, Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhagi Si, Neele Neele Ambar etc. (these come in handy...trust me!). And of course you could try learning today's popular tracks which are guitar based...Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai, Woh Lamhe, Aadat, Bheegi Bheegi, Ya Ali, Tere Bin etc.

The point is...popular songs will do the trick if all you want to do is impress people. These again don't need a terrible amount of effort unlike learning some Vai-ish shred solo.
