What you're talking about are not some "western code"! These are called tabs. In eBGDAE, the 'e' stands for the first string (thin one) and E stands for the 6th string (thick one). The other letters stand for the remaining 4 strings, in order from thinnest to thickest string. These letters (e or B or G etc..) denote the note that is heard if these strings are plucked in open. The number in front of each of the string denotes which fret to play that string on. It is read from left to right.. Here's an example - e--0------------------------------ B----1---------------------------- G------2-------------------------- D--------3------------------------ A----------4---------------------- E------------5-------------------- this means play the following - 1st string open (0-open) then play 2nd string 1st fret the play 3rd strinf 2nd fret.. and so on..
