Distinguish 7th/sus from major/min chords

Hmmm.. Here's one thing... The sus4 chord in a song is usually of the Vth .. I mean.. for example you have an A min song.. The sus4 you get will be probably Esus4..

for ex. Hasili Fisili song (Aminor).. You would get an Esus4.. same is with Thee Illai..

For Bminor scale F#sus4

ex. Lolita..

sus4 is the chord many would miss.. Its just a different sound from min and maj.. (well words cannot express).. So better hear more and train your ear..
