Hi all, just joined today. This is a great forum guys..

Wanted to ask this question for quite some time. How do you classify
a particular song ( or band ) to a genre of music?

    For example:
( Correct me if i am wrong )

Rock N Roll: Elvis Presley, Little Richard
    Classic Rock: Bob Dylan, Beatles
    Folk: Simon & Garfunkel
    Blues: B B King
    Jazz: John Mclaughlin
Rock: Dire Straits, Eagles, Scorpions and a lot more...
Hard Rock: GNR, Pink Floyd, Metallica
Heavy Metal: Deep Purple, Iron Maiden
Death Metal:Don't know of any .. may be Mega Death??
    Old Pop: BoneyM, ABBA
Pop: Britney Spears, Christina Aquilara.. and lot more boring stuff.
    ...
    ..
and a lot more i think.

Now the big question is what is basic element of music which is different
    in each of these?
( i.e like rhythm, lead, use of guitar, vocals depending on what is
stressed more make it a different kind of music? )

Hey kiran, I think bob dylan should belong to folk rock instead of classic rock. and simon and garfunkel belongs to country rock i think. I think its pretty easy to eliminate pop songs, with their synthesized music and mushy mushy lyrics. Metal can be separated from other rock, just by observing the 'heaviness' in the music. Grunge rock is characterised by Non-sexist, angry lyrics and mostly simple music( i think). Nirvana, pearl jam, sound garden, creed belong to this genre. Psychedelic rock is the one with dopey songs. It became popular when the american youth was experimenting with narcotics. Pink floyd is an example of psychedelic rock.
    hope i have helped ya.
