Actually in some ways bassists are more fanatical..maybe not the rock/metal ones but jazz bassists have an insane amount of active circuitry, preamps and tone shaping tools on the bass itself...5-6 knobs, 3-4 toggles etc etc. They are just a lot more obsessive about tone and less driven by gimmickry than guitar players.
For example, there is a lot more experimentation in shapes, woods, pickups etc going on in the boutique builder bass world than there is in the guitar world.

    great KT,
I would also like to experiment with diff guitar shapes, anyway I dont know why most guitarists prefer to stick with the Strat / Tele / LEs Paul shape, as if THAT leads to better tone or playability.
    LOL

I think Roland had this real high end thing(Processor) which Stu hamm used for a while. It was the bass version of The Roland VG88 V guitar system. anyone got a link or a pic???

Few bass processors I know(pretty high end)

    1) Digitech BNX3 Bass Workstation
    2) Line 6 Bass xt live
    3) Boss GT6B Bass Effects Processor
    4) Behringer Bass V Amp Pro(Endorsed by bass gurus Alphonso Johnson, Ken Taylor and Hellmut Hattler)
    5) Line 6 Bass PODxt
    6) Tech 21 Sans Amp Programable Bass Driver DI(this ones pretty interesting)
    7) Boss ME50B Bass Multi Effects
    8) Korg AX3000B

Read my post properly.. a Bassie COMPLETES a bands sound.. Which has a derived corollary "A Bands Sound is Sometimes Incomplete Without a Bassie"

Quite Noticable.. I wonder if Billy Sheenan uses some pedal.. Cause he gets a lot of Distortion...

John Myung uses DELAY.. So we shouldnt be surprised if he uses a Good rack..

Ya Billy Sheenan uses a pedal ... no idea which one ...

Every Pro Bassist uses sound processing equipments. At a minimum he uses Delay and Reverb. Compression is also pretty popular. There are time when they use Chorus too. Jason Newsted uses Big Muff Pi as his overdrive. A lot of them use Overdrive too. It need not distort the sound but a bit of drive adds a sparkle.

Jason NEWSTED USES WAH PEDAL too.. Have you see Binge And Purge??

Compression is used a lot by Death Metal Bands...

What crap. Compressor is used by bassist across all genre. Mainly used by Jazz Guitarists. Infact it's used by most bassists. I dont think Death metal even requires a bass or any bass would do for that crap. Even a Givson Bass into a 20W stranger amp would do.

Well I agree that in most death metal bands a bassist is more of an ornament, but that doesn't stop him getting fussy about his sound and using a compressor.
HA; to tell you the truth, u think that in a gig, anyone listening give even two hoots about the guitar tone? but that doesnt stop us

B.t.w. what purpose would a compressor on bass solve? (+ it would reduce the dynamics of the bass)

Compressor on bass gives a smooth driving tone. Hear Take it That by Pink Floyd. The Compressor on Bass is pretty obvious.
