    alpha1 I BLUES!

Well, there shouldn't be any problem.
I have seen (installed myself) Linux on existing XP comp, and seen atleast 15 (well make that 20) such instances.

No problems faced, IFF you carry out the procedures correctly.

As far as I know, on your specs, any version of Linux should woirk.

well ther r abt 374 version till date - so u got a wide choice
    https://www.linux.org/dist/list.html

diff ppl wud suggest diff versions(aka distributions or distros) heres my list...

    Knoppix Linux
this runs entirely from a CD - so no installatoin hassles
    https://www.knoppix.net/get.php

    SuSE Linux
s'pposed to b the most userfriendly (also has a version tht runs off CD with no installation required)
    https://www.novell.com/products/susel...nux/index.html

    RedHat Fedora Linux
    most commonly used distro
    https://fedora.redhat.com/Download/install.html

i d suggest try knoppix first to get a feel - then move on to suse & fedora & others..... happy *nixing!

    also chk out this link
watch movies & learn how to use linux.......

for installing linux you select only that portion of the hard disk which is not used by winXP --so ur windows data remains safe.
which distro have you chosen? I'd recommend SuSE Linux 10

th rule when installing is "dumbest OS first" - linux can detect ur windows partition but windows cannot detect linux partitions - therefor u have to create the partition using windows -

partition magic is a software u can use for creating the partitions - so u create partitions like C: D: E: F: etc.... maybe 10 GB each depending on ur harddisk capacity

if u r careful u wont lose any data

^^by usual s/w if u mean windows softwares ..NO!

bt there are Linux vareiy available for almost all the popular windows s/w like for MS-office u have OpenOffice - for Photshop u have GIMP etc....

some windows s/w can be run on Linux by using any windows emulators like WINE , bt its not guranteed that the s/w will run correctly with th emulator though I had no prob running Winamp with Wine ..... ;-)

I had the same concern once regarding the isp not supporting linux. So I rejected ISPs that were in infancy who wer ignoring linux support. Bharati has an excellent linux support...there must be many others now--- if they dont support linux abuse them!!

List of s/wares wrking on lnux?? Could u give a list of s/w that run on windows?

u dont need any list of media codecs --- gone are the days when u had to tweak linux ... desktops like suse 10 etc would detect almost anything ... sometimes I feel it even detects my fingers:p:
