How to Choose the Right Guitar Class for You

October 9, 2025 by Gautam Leave a Comment

You see, choosing the right guitar class is one of the first big steps in your music journey. And it’s not really about which teacher or which course is “best”. It’s more about what you really want out of your learning.

If you just want to learn guitar for fun, to play your favorite songs, sing along, maybe record a few reels, then your learning style will be relaxed and song-based. You’ll focus more on enjoying the music, feeling the rhythm, and getting comfortable with chords rather than music theory.

But if you’re thinking of taking a certified course, then your approach changes. You’ll want to look for classes that are affiliated with recognized boards like Trinity, RSL (Rockschool), or ABRSM. These courses give you a structured way to learn, theory, technique, scales, and graded performance exams, all helping you build discipline and a proper foundation.

Now, if your goal is to compose music, jam with friends, or even start a band someday, your path will be different again. You’ll want a teacher who encourages creativity, improvisation, and collaboration, not just exams. Because in that setup, it’s not about right or wrong notes, it’s about how you express what you feel through your guitar.

No matter which direction you choose, the first few months are pretty similar for everyone. You’ll learn basic open chords, simple melodies, rhythm patterns, and how to connect your ear with your fingers. Once you’ve built that base, that’s when your learning truly becomes yours.

So here’s my suggestion : before you enroll anywhere, take five quiet minutes and ask yourself:

Do I want to play for joy?
Do I want a structured, certified journey?
Or do I want to create and perform my own music?

When you’re clear about that, choosing a class becomes simple. Because the right class isn’t necessarily the most famous or the most expensive, it’s the one that matches your why.

And once you find that, every practice session will start to feel exciting again. You’ll notice that you don’t have to force yourself to practice, you’ll want to pick up the guitar.

That’s when your real journey begins, not just learning to play guitar, but learning to enjoy the sound you create.
