Hi, What is this technique called Raking. I have read that this technique is used a lot by Randy Rhoads.
Hey Ronnie.. YOu posted the question on the wrong forum. It will be moved but.. Raking is a technique used when the successive notes to be played are on the next string and is near the note played.. So you start placing the fingers and strike all the notes down. NOT like a CHord but with seperations.. The generally approach(Alternate Picking) would be to play the note down and the next note up.. So that the movement is not restricted. But he is all gonan be at one show.. Check out "One" By Metallica.. the intro solo has a Rake..
Also, raking is generally associated with sweeping over muted notes. ----5----------------12b----- ------5------------x---------- --------5---------x----------- ----------7~----x------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ This is a small riff played with one continuous upstroke followed by a rake in your downstroke to play the 12th fret.
am not sure i got the rake...but if i did then there is one in the top gun anthem by satriani when he goes into that riff he plays....after the powerchord sequence...
No thats not the Rake.. Rake is in the First Clean solo of ONE - Metallica,.. First solo of Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd.. What you are saying is a sweep pick..
Now there are two definitions of raking floating around here 1. By Jayanth, which says, playing successive notes on the next strings which are near to the note currently being played. 2. By esgallindeion, which says, sweeping over muted notes to play a single note. Now which one is raking !!!!
sweeping of succesive notes which may or may not be muted which are near to the note currently being played..
Check my definition again. Muting is an essential feature which differentiates raking from sweep picking.
Then obviously either you have misread or they have made a mistake. The muffled sound is what makes a sweep into a rake.
