i got few cds for me having videos...but some vidz im not able to play as they ask for codec... now what on earth is codec?? and why some vidz are playing and some not(asking for codec) tch..!!
co dec (as per my vague understanding) is short form for coder decoder a codec is any technology for compressing and decompressing data ..my interpretation is that if some media file is stored (coded/compresses) in particular format say DAT or MPEG or AVI, then possibly the vdo players application does not have the capability to decode (interpret) that format ... then the player will ask for the codec for that particular format ( in the form of a plugin/update etc ...)
sixstringin is right. decompression should take place in same way around how it was compressed. compression/decompression makes use of algorithms, which define how compression/coding should happen. codecs are same. say you hve a video file, compressed to .bjr format(example). You should have a codec (algrothm/program) which can decode .bjr formats, to get your media player display the contents as streaming video. The media player package comes with some inbuild codecs. If it finds some strange format, for which it doesn't hv a codec, then it will ask for 'vini, codec pls' does it play chapathis? some philips drive used to play itseems., they used to advertise like that. plays anything.
ummmm... what do i need to make em play? just tell me that....ditch codec! @cryptu nahi re..i have to make do only and only wid windows media player and winamp!
^ ok thanx let me google if i find it for download!! and if i do? what shud i do..just install it and thats about it? those vidz would start playing automatically?
do sth check this first its for media player go on tools>>>options>>player>>make sure the download codecs automatically thing is ticked coz i think that it usually should be looking for the req codec by itself
What crap! All ppl are suggesting things that can play ALMOST anything? Get MPLAYER. IT Plays ALL MEDIA FILES. For chapatis you need an external drive that reads it, Guitarboy, make one and I guarantee, mplayer can decode the info.
