Let's take an example, E|---5h6------| You place your index finger on the 5th fret of the E string and play the note, while it's still ringing out hammer your middle finger on the 6th fret. That's called a hammer-on, not a hammer Hope this helps, any queries, ask me.
pluck a note with say the third fret pressed down with your index finger. Now you use your middle finger to 'hammer' or press down the fourth fret hard without plucking the string again. You do this hard because that way you can make the sound of the fourth fret come out as loud as the third fret sound and this is called hammer on. The reverse of this action, plucking the fourth fret and then lifting your finger off in such a way that the loudness of sound changes to the third fret thats called pulling off. In tab format hammer ons are : 0h3 and pull offs are: 3p0
thanks. but that advice i just left is a cut and paste job from advice i left a long time ago. newbies need to search this forum before asking i gave up posting here because i'd nicely explain chord theory, get no points for it and then someone asks the same question about a week later. :annoyed:
