are preamps cheaper than the amp itself? i mean considerably..?
i think u can use softwares like amplitube etc and directly connect ur guitar to ur pc.. connect speakers for the output.. correct me if i'm wrong

    i heard so

i heard that they are much cheaper just around some 500 bucks and it amplifies the signal to a certain level good enough for the pc to process and quality is better.

and then using guitar rig is way more fun than normal amplifier

    Whoa, that's pretty cool.

Waise that's a question I too admit ignorance about: I've never seen a "pre-amp" first hand (or so I think). Is a processor/pedal same as a pre-amp? I sorta got confused in the terminology myself.

not sure though but yes a proc can be considered as a preamp...

A processor has a preamp inside. The amplug also has a preamp inside, but it also has a dsp, so its a small processor.
What you need for using guitar rig is an interface not a preamp.

Ummm... Could someone explain. And only someone who knows this... Detailed info appreciated

Q1: Is Preamp = the entire chain between the guitar and the amplifier?
Q2: Are processors and pedals preamps?

sorry; i've explained this too many times in great detail in the past and don't have the patience to do it again. sadly both RSJ and gigpad are dead or i would make the effort and serve you a plate of delicious copypasta from those threads.

to be very short and specific: a preamplifier is not a "device" but an electrical building block. the role of a preamp is to convert impedances, amplify and condition a source signal so that it is in a suitable condition to be used efficiently by the next stage.

beyond that, google is your friend.

How about just a Yes or No for Q1 and Q2? After that, I'll get off your back and get on google's...

preamp is the signal before the power amplifier....its resposible for the tone,gain,voicing,EQ...the poweramp is jus volume..it does not play a mojor part in the tone..(apart from jus coloring it a bit)...
2.yes u can use processors as preamps..lot of pro bands r doin in...coupling it wit a good poweramp...

Imagine how cool it would be.
Laptop, interface, done. That's all you're ever buying to play, perform, jam AND record.
(this excludes software costs, for obvious reasons ;))
(Also, if you won't use any other hardware, then that laptop had BETTER be GODLY, if you want to do advanced stuff. But I think everyone except me has a great laptop, and the bourgeois are generally more ready to spend on laptops than on guitars and stuff.)

I *KNOW* I'll one day upgrade to a digital setup.

And the cost will be 2-4 peti! :p

Actually, for OP and the others, here's the thing.

You get what you pay for. Period. You want something GOOD at a LOW PRICE? Forget it. It'll always be a compromise, and no match for the good stuff, so may as well save up and get better things instead of wasting money on crap.

So here, OPs supposed 'magic' items -

    Enjoy.

Although I'll also suggest you buy my amp if price is such a constraint.

It's for 2k - if that's too much for you, you may as well forget guitar altogether >_>
