This is really complex opinion...Im doing this as a general analysis why fans end up hating the bands they once loved/idea of what selling out means to a fan/is commercial growth coupled with fame mean selling out?
I think selling out is a ridiculous term to begin with. It usually happens when you use a concept or an outlook to sell your music more than the music itself. For the fan, it's when they're buying an album for reasons other than music. You'd be a sell-out to punks who bought your album because you were anti-estabilishment if you went and campaigned for republicans. You'd be a sell-out to nerds who bought your album because you painted your face and then cut your hair short and wore a tie to your next show. Personally, I don't believe in the term because I feel you shouldn't be influenced by factors beyond the music you're listening to. It's easier said than done. Also, I can't understand why people take bands switching genres as treachery. If music is an expression of what's within, surely it cannot stay constant or consistent with age?
