hey stoned survival , since you are practising scales - i would suggest you take up some finger exercises, you can find many finger exercises in the tutorials forum , just check them out , once you are familiar with the scale then probably you can practise more on timing and speed - remember at any given time you should not loose accuracy of the scales which is the most imporatant thing ...

Try out the following songs for improving your strumming. ( I hope when you say tough rhythm, you are talking about strumming )

    1) Wonderwall - Oasis
    2) Breakfast At Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something
    3) Every Rose has its thorn - Poison
    4) Wild World - Mr. Big
    5) Two Steps Behind - Def Leppard ( Pretty easy actually )

paster of puppets roicks man... hetfeld was the master of down strokes...

    try to learn megadeth songs
    train of of consequences
this was my life-. easy song.. but has a generic rhytym and style which u will find useful to use in many other songs. the lead is also very trhtmeic. one string alternate between open high e string and high fret notes.. verycool actually suits a rhythm guitarist.

metallica song i would try: unforgiven-- easy satisfying rhythm, one , blackened,
seek and destroy from kill em all is very good to begin with as well.

if metal is not your style and u r looking for acoustic rhythm strummign songs,

dave mathew, john mayer are two artistes u would want to look at.
songs like crash,no such thing, clarity.. u will find at least a dozen songs to learn

modern rock songs u may learn:
save tonite - eagle eye cherry
    barely breathing- duncan sheikh
    counting blue cars- dishwalla
    wonderwall- oasis
inside out - eve6 - cool song to learn
cumbersome - forgot name of band
time of yoru life - green day
    basket case - greenday
    vertical horizon- everything u want
    ironic- alanis morrisette
kiss me - six pence none the richer
big yellow taxi- the counting crows version
    closing time - semisonic
