Best guitar differs in many senses. Some people hold technique to be the most important part of guitar-playing, others say speed, others say feelings and so on.

However, to introduce yourself to the world of amazing/genre-shaping/great-sounding guitar players, I'd suggest you give a listen to

    - BB King
    - Jimi Hendrix
    - Jimmy Paige (Led Zep)
    - Angus Young (AC/DC)
    - Duane Allman (the Allman brothers band)
    - Randy Rhoads
    - Slash (my all time favourite of Guns N Roses)
    - Joe Satriani
    - Steve Vai
    - Dimebag Darrell (Pantera)
    - Alexi Laiho (COB)
    - Paul Gilbert
    ...and the list goes on.

This is by no means comprehensive, and is not sposed to be a top-10 guitarists or that sorta thing.

Also, you can try a few songs from Dire Straits (Brothers in arms, Single handed sailor, romeo and juliet, sultans of swing, walk of life etc etc). The lead guitarist is Mark Knopfler.

A few more (these are speedy and ones with unique styles esp. mike campbell from the heartbreakers):

    Alain Jorgensen
    Mike Campbell
    Tom Petty

I'll give you a song at a time. Tell me if you've heard it and we can move on. If you need the song, get it off limewire. If you can't, PM me and I'll send it to you. It's not the best or anything but good enough to be in this list.

The Bluest Blues- Alvin Lee and Ten Years After

    rahulp **Fallen Angel**

    Lot of stuff already mentioned..

You could try listening to 'While my guitar gently weeps' tribute cover by Yellow Matter Custard on YouTube. The lead guitarist is Paul Gilbert.. It's got a sweeping solo mixing the original genius with some shred delight.
