    Hi guys...first post!!!
Am fan of Carnatic Music as well as other forms. I also learn guitar. Before I came across this site...I ventured to play Carnatic Music on the guitar. I have had no probs in any ragas while played on C scale( major minor.) I can play the mohanam varanam on C major without hitches. So why cant we take Sa as C always as long as we stick tothat scale? I may not have been able to express myself clearly.... But please explain.

Basic Info about Carnatic music on guitar

    Hi all,
Have been away for a long time.
A few general clarifications (to my knowledge, these are correct) for everyone
    1. Carnatic Music does not have a fixed frequency for its swaras. It is dependent on the singer which frequency to set his 'Sa' at.
    2. This is in total opposition to Western Music in which C4 is at a fixed 261.67 Hz (to be precise).
This C4 would be the sound produced when you play your B (2nd string) string 1st fret (in your standard EADGBE tuning) .
(C4 is the middle C in a piano - the piano being the gold standard for frequency comparison)
The gold standard is that the A note at 440Hz should be at the 5th fret on your first string.

Therefore, you can base your carnatic Sa on any note of the western scale (C D E F G A B)
The thing that makes this possible and to take care is the equal temperament - the ratio of frequencies of adjacent notes remains the same.

That means, the ratio between C and C# will be same as G and G# and likewise, the ratio between Sa and suddha Ri will be same as suddha Ri and Chatsruthi Ri.... (I almost totally sure about this)

To reemphasize the basing of Sa on any western note, I just tuned my violin with Sa at E (2nd string open). So, with this carnatic scale on the guitar, I can define the swaras

    Sa = E
    Suddha Ri = F (2nd string, 1st fret)
    Chatsruthi Ri = F# (2nd string, 2nd fret)
    ...
With this I can play any raga on the guitar....

I hope I have made it clear for the newcomers.... Let the giants of this forum tear this apart...
    Awaiting questions...
