Can somebody list out all the types of rock genre with the artist names, I wud be quite useful trivia for me
I'll list all the sub-genres of metal i know of and some bands as examples. Thrash Metal - Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, etc Black metal - Dimmu borgir, Immortal, etc Grind/Gore - Cannibal corpse, Impaled, etc Death metal - Morbid angel, Vader, Death, Entombed etc Melodic death - In flames, Arch enemy etc Power/Progressive - Blind guardian, Dream theater, Iced earth, etc Doom metal - Morgion, My dying bride, etc Goth metal - Lacuna coil, Theatre of tragedy, etc Tech metal - Opeth, Meshuggah, etc Thats about all i know. If anyone has something to add to that list, do so.

Then there is grunge, made famous by bands like Nirvana and Alice in chains. After that there was the post-grunge period, which gave birth to bands like Nine Inch Nails, Tool etc.
Thanks MARS. I forgot this, Modern rock - Incubus, Chevelle, Our lady peace, Audioslave, Red hot Chilli peppers, The white stripes, A perfect circle, Velvet revolver etc.. As you can see there is a lot of variation in this genre, but basically they are Modern rock.
Ummm.. pretty decent list. but you should bare it in mind that there is a very thin line bordering these genres and it is not right to say that a particular band belongs only to one particular genre... eg... blind guardian has been put under Power/Prog metal... right. but they are also put under melodic metal in many sites I have seen... also under heavy metal.
