questions from a novice

    can someone please explain how and in what way(s) Carnatic is different from Hindustani classical music??

    abhi jo yaad hai apun bolega... tum sunega......
    carnatic is SOUTH indian
    hindustani is NORTH indian
    carnatic is CLASSICAL
    hindustani is NOT CLASSICAL(jam got it wrong there)

    forgot

    got bad marks in sst (70! sobs couldnt be generous)
    but what i gave you is true!!!

    There's a thread by harini here i suppose on this....but basically

    north indian music has 12 seminotes ...like sa re ga ma...and all plus komal and teevra versions of some notes...just like sharps and flats in western....

    carnatic on the other hand has a lot more basic notes...they r kinda purists...i must say...:)
