Power Chords Power Chords are often played by using the 1st and 5th of the scale - often just bottom 3 strings of a bar chord. They omit the 3rd of the scale which results in a mellow blend when distorted. Chord Formulas Major = 1 3 5 Minor = 1 b3 5 Diminished = 1 b3 b5 Augmented = 1 3 #5 Major 6 = 1 3 5 6 Dominant 7 = 1 3 5 b7 Major 7 = 1 3 5 7 Chords may be constructed using above formulas. Numbers correspond to notes of the relevant Major scale. E.g. chord C Major uses notes 1 3 5 from scale of C Major, i.e. C E G. Suspended or "sus" chords exclude the 3rd and replace it with the 2nd or 4th. The suspense created is usually resolved by reinstating the 3rd.
