very nicely put indeed ... lord_neo .. seems you are a roxette fan .. glad to have found another roxette fan here ... though some of the roxette songs like Hotblooded are too heavy to be called powerpop ... they could be outright rockers ... think its Marie singing them that makes them a bit Pop'ish..

d00d... you just called sigur ros as pop?

I cant believe that this thread actually exists.

I heard one of Sigus Ros songs on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack (which is an awesome compilation).
Love the way they use 'voice' as a musical instrument. Was really hard to believe that the song has absolutely no lyrics.

POP can be called as a hybrid genre..
It includes soft rock, country, remix kind of stuffs, reggae...etc..
It has bits from all genres..

ROCK : It is of many types. like
    (a)
Progressive rock (Jethro Tull,Pink Floyd) and
    Psychedelic Rock(Pink Floyd)
[sort of a narrative in form of music, includes lengthy songs related to nature or science or war... may be related to imaginations hallucinations(Psychedelic) etc]..

(b)Hard Rock (Judas Priest, Black Sabath,Led Zep)
[Very hard music...guitars drums play the vital role..various guitar effects..Lyrics mostly related to frustration or anger may be love etc]
(c)Metal (quite similar as above) (Metallica,GnR)
(d)Nu-Metal (Derived version from Metal and Progressive rock...)(Eg: Iron Maiden, Ramstein,Korn etc..)

Grunge is a sort of POP n Rock mix (Eg: Nirvana)..

Wannabe death metal + Beatiful, uninspired Progressive wankery.

I wonder why people would spend half their lives giving a "proper" definition of a band.
