Thanks to user> AmOgHa007 . replying to his question in a private message gave me this idea to post this small tutorial here. THIS IS A SMALL INTRO TUTORIAL TO CARNATIC MUSIC ON THE GUITAR Playing Carnatic ragas is NOT AT ALL easy, especially on a western instrument like the guitar. There are limited Scales in western music as compared to the vast ocean of Carnatic music. Because we have hundreds of janya ragas (derived scales) of the 72 major or Melakarta ragas in Carnatic music. All western scales have symmetrical ascending and descending scales. for example, C major scale - the ascending scale is c d e f g a b C and the descending scale is the reverse of ascending.... C b a g f e d c All the notes of Carnatic ragas have different ascending and descending scales called aarohanam and avarohanam respectively... It takes hundreds of hours of practice to learn and play a carnatic raga perfectly. you can find the aarohanam and avarohanam of every raga here >>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Janya_Ragas And subsequently convert them to guitar notes using the notation equal table seen here: >>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swara let us look at the example of the raga kathanakutoohalam. It is the base raga for the very popular krithi "Raghuvamsa Sudha" by Patnam Subramania Iyer. It is also the song used for the telugu song "Yamaha Nagari Kalakaththa puri" from the Chiranjeevi starrer "Choodaalani vundi" : aarohanam: S R2 M1 D2 N3 G3 P S avarohanam: S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S converting them into guitar notes using the second link above>> aarohanam: c d f a b e g C avarohanam: C b a g f e d c On the guitar in tab format>>> aarohanam: e>----------5-7-------8--------------------------------------------- b>-------6-------5-8---------------------------------------------- g>--5-7--------------------------------------------------------- d>------------------------------------------------------------ a>------------------------------------------------------------ E>------------------------------------------------------------ avarohanam; e>--8-7-5-------------------------------------------------------- b>----------8-6-5------------------------------------------------ g>------------------7-5----------------------------------------- d>------------------------------------------------------------ a>------------------------------------------------------------ E>------------------------------------------------------------ it is a co-incidence that the avarohanam of kadanakutoohalam is exactly similar to the descending scale of c major of western music ...i.e. C b a g f e d c hope this helps. email me if you have any more doubts thanks, regards, abhay P.S: I am more acessible on facebook where i can reply quicker. send me a friend request at https://www.facebook.com/abhishek.malyala ...mention a message on facebook that you are from IGT so that I dont ignore your friend request.
