You need to take a look at the land itself. The land in New Orleans (Louisiana area) is really crappy compared to that of Mumbai.

Here's the biggest difference between the two:
    Mumbai wind gusts: 35-45mph
    Katrina wind gusts: 175+mph.

I doubt there's a lot of cities that can take the damage that Katrina could dish out.

nope buddy ... the damage was not mainly due to taht fact ...

the damage was mainky due to this fact:
the buildings there are made of plywood ... and cardbard ... they just have a metal structure (that too is very rare)

in india all the buildings are made of reinforced concrete ...

Category 5 Hurricane — winds 156 mph and up (135+ kt)
Catastrophic damage. Concrete power poles damaged. Total failure of non-concrete reinforced roofs. Extensive or total destruction to non-concrete residences and industrial buildings. Some structural damage to concrete structures, especially from large debris, such as cars, large appliances, etc. Extensive glass failure due to impact of flying debris and explosive pressure forces during extreme gusts. Many well-constructed storm shutters ripped from structures. Some fuel storage tanks rupture. Nearly all construction cranes blown down. Air full of very large and heavy projectiles and debris. Shrubs and trees up to 100% defoliated; numerous large trees blown down. Up to 100% of palm fronds bent, twisted, or blown off; numerous crowns blown from palm trees; flooding causes major damage to lower floors of all structures near the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas may be required.

Katrina was listed as a Category 5 hurricane. I sincerely doubt that even Mumbai is strong enough to withstand a hurricane of that magnitude and return to work in a short period of time.

    that is nice info ...

but a point to be noted is taht why are americans so lazy as to not to build houses of concrete?
