I have RHL, PCQ, Mandrake and Knoppix

 

oh well, i found da drivers at last, but im havin a prob installin. im xpected 2 type in HELLA LOTTA command lines (which i dun get head or tail out of) n its pissin me off. cant seem 2 get da modem installed. no probs wid ne oder hardware.

 

Learn the commands .. its not that hard

 

i got a help page, which gave me step by step instructions 2 install da modem. but i dun follow a few steps... letz c.. il try sum more 2moro..

gal what distro are u running? most will have autoconfiguration... like top players such as SuSE and RHL have (wow) user-friendly tools for configuring everything... if that's a pain check out how to install under linux on your modem manufacturer's page... yep that help page should help ;-)

as for windows ... well I would say even Win98 is better than XP... come to think of it both suck... a Mac is somewhere between the clean interface of a W32 and the raw power of a linux box... Linux for PPC is also gr8, a friend of mine has SuSE8/PPC on his iBook with MacOSX panther... these things are great guns... but being children of UNIX all of these are more or less the same and offer great features...

The point is UNIX (and hence linux) is far easier to break into as far more exploits are easily available for it. On the other hand, less viruses for linux. Anyway everyone's comps aren't getting broken into, right?

yeah it sure is easy to break into. .. but its not much of a nuisance as a home OS. .. only in networks. .. but people here are generally used to Windos. .. need to try out Linux. ...

 

hey scot, i got mandrake 10. dat version waz da l8st released by mandrake... sumtime march 2004.

guez il hav sumtime dis weekend 2 poke arnd linux. havnt dun nethin abt da modem yet. dint find time.

n as i said, all my oder h/w has been detected automatically. only da ADSL modem seems 2 b da prob. if i get it installed, i think il b INTO linux soon. i cant take XP nemore... da damn thing sux! n hey, no way 98 waz better dan xp. cmon, man! it waz a blessin 2 get rid of dat stupid borin dumb useless crash-prone interface. xp dusnt crash very often (supposedly), but i hav dis special knack of crashin it evry now n den im gifted

i havnt used linux much b4. installed sum crappy flavors a coupla yrs ago. n i cudnt stand em. got back 2 win. now, im ready 2 shift. n i will.. juz a matter of time.. :beer:

i actually wanna use linux but the thing is , so many softwares are not compatible with it. like music recording software. tell me more jayanth and saxena.

i meant i did chek out a few help pages frm da link u gav me, but i havnt used em yet, coz i dint hav time 2 boot into linux n poke arnd... hav been usin only xp 4 da past few days...

n yea, waz tryin 2 sort out da prob again 2day morn.. partially successful. a lil more time n i think i wud hav da modem installed...

might help ... there are certain softwares like Adobe and all which won't work with linux . . but otherwise there are softwares available on the net for linux for almost any job that you could do in windows ... for sound recording you could use Krecorder in KDE or Grecorder in Gnome .. almost all DE's have a sound recording panel. .. the link above also gives some tips on sound recording from the shell .. .tell me if there's problem or how this link goes ..

yeah sure .. .. try out anything from redhat , Suse .. mandrake. .. dunno about mandrake. .but Suse is quite userfriendly and so is redhat. ..

 

Try the PCQ Linux.. which is based on Red Hat and distributed free by PC quest .. Issue May 2004..
