u gotta get thorough with playing the scales ... that way u'll also learn how to use all the strings + u'll learn how to "form" your own chords ...
and it will help u build speed
and u can improvise any time ... without rehearsing ... and sound like a guitar god ...

belive me ... practice scales ... it will also help u build musical ears ...

and all this wont take up so much time ... within few months u'll play anything u want ...
