those "symbols" are called chords ... and it depict where to play the chords like: C#m-----------B----------A----------E Tere liye hum hain jiye hothon ko siye means u needa ta play C#m chord while singing "Tere liye" part of the song ....
i think he means what are #'s this denotes a sharp .. Sharps are sumwhat 2 b's( b=flats) for eg ... f#=gb c#=db but they arent any SHARPS 4 ....B and E therefore no flats 4 ....C and F !
