though james and kirk both have used finger picking... u can also play this with a pick..its a pretty good string skipping exercise if i may say so...slowly but steadily. ..u will get a hang of it..just be patient and put in the time.
It is easiest to play the above tab using finger picking but as dharmatma said it is also possible to play this with a pick (held between index and middle finger) and thumb to pick the low E. Difficult to get used to but nice to show-off.
you can still play it with the pick with a "cheat". try play it as : x 5 x x 0 you'll get the sound but with an added percussive sound

or u could do what i would do.. get a buddy.. make him play the high lead, u just play the arpegios : then u can use the pick..
@disturbed...even i found it hard in the beginnin..i kept hitting the wrong strings time and again... finger picking this is fine...but if u want a work out for ur right hand..use a pick.. it will help u to play string skipping patterns.. just my 0.2. i hardly know to play though.
no it wont sound right it will have the basic sound there but with an added extra - the percussive element but like i said its an easy cheat method that only does a half job. i don't recommend it but if someone is getting frustrated like crap then they can use that to get an idea of the sound.
