Two very basic neck tapping exercises... (for players who haven't tapped before ;) )

    1
    e--7-5---8-5---10-5---12-5---13-5---15-5---17-5-----------------
    b---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    G---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here you place your 1st finger over e string 5th fret. For 7 you can do a hammer-on+pull-off but for 8, 10 onwards use 1st (or 2nd) fingertip of your right hand to do the same.

    2
    e---8-5----------8-5---------8-5------and so on ---
    B----------8-5-------------------------------------------
    G------------------------9-5------------------------------

First hold the 5th frets of first three strings with index finger of left hand. The first string notes use pinky hammer-ons. The right hand finger usages are shown in blue. Do this very fast.

    Hope you enjoy them.

Hey strat..good exercise..but let me ask you something..how can a real beginner will be able to play tapping..when he/she dont have the concept of hammer-on & pull-off's ?

So,it will better if you can take your time to explain these first and then eventually come to tapping.

    Good point arindamda!

excellent point arindamda. also, it is very important (if you are not playing clean but playing a distorted lead tone) to place the tapping finger of the rite hand dead center of the string so that it doesnt touch the strings immediately above or below and create noise.
anyway, nice exercise nevertheless. will practice. :)

Sorry, what I meant are those people who haven't tried tapping yet but know respectively easier left hand techniques like hammer-on etc.
Thanks Arindam-da for pointing that out.

Ok, hammer-on is like this: Suppose you're holding 5th fret of 1st string with your index finger... (the note A). Now you pick the string with plec making the A sound... then you slam your third finger hard on the 7th fret without picking the string with plec. See it sounds B quite clear.

Ok, trying to teach one of my fellow guitarists(the person reffered to knows who he is), I came face to face with a unique problem. The guy can read tabs quite well and also knows some chord shapes, but if you ask him what note is string x fret y, he cannot find out on his own. This is the lack of some basic music knowledge. Unfortunately, some proffessional teachers create this problem themselves so as to increase their tenure of teaching a perticular student. So I am going to post some basic music facts.

Few very basic music facts related to guitar

    HTML:
    The note clock:
                                    A
                                  G# Bb
                                 G B
                                F# C
                                 F C#
                                  E D
                                    D#
    It starts with A and returns to A. Linearly it is A Bb B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A.

Just think of it as a clock with A as 12.

The guitar string and fret notes for 1st string:

    Open 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 19th 11th 12th
       E F F# G G# A Bb B C C# D D# E

Similarly, using the note clock you can find out the note on the other strings and frets.
