its not strumming all the way from the start. listen carefully he's playing the chords in arpeggio for the start and right at the end. In between its strumming.

hey guys, thought id put in my 2 cents bout the strumming pattern...
he strikes the base string of every chord 1st (which is a halfway D i guess..d) and then its..D (lil pause) U D U....d D- UDU.....hope that helps..and he only starts the strumming after the 1st chorus is over before that and towards the end he picks..
