Hello Folks, I now own a Steel String guitar (https://indianguitartabs.com/showthread.php?p=125148#post125148) and wanted to know whether one can use one's nails to play such a type of guitar? In simply words, Is it better to play a songs like 'Chura Liya Hai tumne Jo Dil Ko - 1973' with a pick or with Nails? I have been growing my nails and they are quite long now Please help :nw:
both sound totally different ... usually finger picking is more mellow ... using a plectrum will make the attack sharper n harsher ... it is entirely upto u n your ears ...
If you use nails, it's no more finger picking. It's nail picking. But picking your nails or nose is different.
i tried on both steel as well as nylon strings....nylon is better...u stand a less chance of damaging ur nails.
yes for nylon strings you can use nails .. but i wouldnt recommend it..the nails have a slightl curvature to them and string will snag no matter how hard you try .. but on the other hand most of the classical players use thier nails to play .. but perhaps they have their experience to help them out.
firstly, the ideal combination isnt all nail or all skin. its a bit of both and you should grow your nails big enough so as to see the tip from the other side. then, finger-style playing is made for the nylon string guitar, because it has a way better response to touch. that doesnt mean, though, that you cannot play finger style on steel strings.
arey yes,,,,, cut your nails ,, its neccessary to cut da nails while playing as it interefers like anything while playing properly!
dont grow ur nails too long....or u'll damage them and da sound... as sayanakaharry said....u need a bit of both to get a crisper sound....start plucking it wid ur finger and then drag it a little and complete the pluck wid ur nail...
or what about playing with your prick ... heck u can even piss on the strings n make some cool sound FX ...
i pick steel strings all the tme with my fingers...infact that's the only way i can play guitar......my suggestion is don't grow the enails too much...they have to be just right to get a bit of nail and finger to get the great sound. it's much better than plec.....atleast that's how i like it.......plecs r too sharp for me....
