    The beginning effect (engine type volume changes) is a tremolo pedal.

    The "engine" sound can be done with a slide (a finger sized metal or glass cylinder) also.

    Turn on the distortion.
    Move the Slide up the fretboard. i.e. eg from fret 10 ---> 15 very slowly (1st gear)
    simultaneously Pick the A and D strings

    then next move the slide from 9 ---> 12 (2nd gear)
    simultaneously Pick the A and D strings

    then from 5 ---> 9 (3rd gear)
    simultaneously Pick the A and D strings

    and so on.

    The frets I mentioned are just indicative. Fool around and discover better sounding slides.
    Same holds true for the strings. Fool around with E+A string G+D strings etc.
    but remember u need the to strings to be 5 semitones apart from each other - i.e. u cannot use the G + B strings. It wont sound that good.
