Those were in-ear monitors cum ear protection ---- Imagine standing in the middle of high volume PA/Amps for hours, and doing that for years? Would they hear a thing after a few years? Those protect their ears from damage high volume can do, and also act as in-ear monitor (Monitors give them the sound they would hear from their amps/bass etc), so they know how they sound on the stage.....
