OK my turn..although shwasnada has answered it already pretty comprehensively.
Music is about emotions, right? ALL emotions? So why is misery, death, depression not a fit subject to write about if happiness is? There can be beauty in sadness. If you want to live in a world that only sings about happiness and the yuppy way of life, then Britney Spears is the way to go. And I find it funniest when Metallica fans say stuff like this...of course, songs like One and Harvester of Sorrow are about walks in the park, is it? So why do you object when the same subject matter is done with a hundred times more intelligence and technical ability? (eg: Egyptian plague-Creeping Death vs Nile's work).

Point 2: Why do people decide to hate genres as a whole? Listen with your ears, not your prejudices. If I find musical validity in DM or classical music or Hindi film music or dance music (I love Massive Attack, for example), I don't see why I should either love everything about that genre or nothing about it.

Point 3: Technical ability: It doesnt just mean playing fast. There are interesting chord progressions. very very strange time signatures (19/16, 25/16), modal as opposed to key signature based stuff, etc etc that happens in DM.
