    Hi Smriti
    welcome to IGT
    where you learn a lot,
    ;) apart from guitaring.

    Your query is called "Voicing"

    FYI : though the following are not related to your actual question, you need to know certain things.
    1) SAPNON ki RAANI is in Bm not Am
    2) The 4 positions you have shown are ALMOST the same voice, so it really doesnt matter which of the 4 u play.

    Coming back to your point:
    Youre right about trying to know which chord position to play the chord.
    The G major has over 10 positions on the normal guitar fretboard.
    how do u know which of the 10 to play?

    One of the ways to finding this out is in finding the HIGHEST NOTE u hear when that chord is played.
    I can go on explaining this but before that I need you to do some homework first.

    Find out 4 more positions of the G major.
    NOTE: The positions should not have a SINGLE OPEN STRING

    Reply back to this thread, and then I will explain further.

  6. Bandbaaja

    Bandbaaja Pronounced Band Baaaa Ja

    Sweetheart,thats a lot of effort.
    I am sure many beginners would love to see this post!!!
    Amazing work!!!

    I didnt check all but some are also (partly) wrong
    For example
    in (8) you have to see that u dont play the fat bottom E and A strings
    in (12) i am wondering how long you can hold on to that chord position !!!

    But I am so sorry, I am not very satisfied.
    I told u I dont want open strings.
    most of your positions have open strings.

    DONT GET ME WRONG HERE
    We're trying to learn something ok?

    Now thinking practically, I think I made a mistake by asking you positions of the G chord.
    Maybe I should have said Bb or F or anything else.
    Why I am saying this is because, these positions that u have mentioned cannot be shifted to play some other chord.
    If you didnt get what I am saying, just read further...

    In any case, to continue on your question
    you need the G chord in positions that clearly sound different because of the highest note hit.

    For that, let me put in 3 positions.
    NOTE: The X instead of the string Name means you dont play that string.

    1) This is the most used NON-OPEN String position
    If you look at it it is nothing but the F chord position shifted to the 3rd fret.
    The highest note here is the G on the first string 3rd fret.

    e||---|---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    B||---|---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    G||---|---|---|-2-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    D||---|---|---|---|-4-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    A||---|---|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    X||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---

    2) This position is the D chord position shifted to the 7th fret
    Remember to not strike the bottom 3 strings.
    The highest note here is the B on the first string 7th fret.

    e||---|---|---|---|---|---|-2-|---|---|---|---|---
    B||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---
    G||---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---
    X||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    X||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    X||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---

    3) This is the B chord position shifted to the 10th fret
    Again here you dont play the bottom A & E strings
    The highest note here is the D on the first string 10th fret.

    ---------------------------------------10th
    ---------------------------------------Fret
    e||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|
    B||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-4-|
    G||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-3-|
    D||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-2-|
    X||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
    X||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

    Play these 3 chords,
    and you will see (rather you will hear)
    that though they are all the G chords,
    playing the same G, B & D notes,
    they sound distinctly different!!

    Now when you hear a song and if u know that there is a G chord to be played,
    its usually not amongst the 20 positions you have displayed,
    but generally speaking, its one of these 3 or of course the open G chord.

    Mind you, each of these 3 positions have their own variants.
    Like for example, most of your 20 positions were just variants of the Open G chord position.
    Though they are important for voicing too, we are not getting into that right now.

    More on this with sample songs and positions, after your feedback...

    smriti // Silent Observer //

    well bobby i dont know whether i ll b a pro or not but i really want my basics about chords 2 b strong n i dont mind beginning it with SAPNO ki RANi....... :p:

    Bandbaaja u said some of the chords that i hv listed r ( partly or completely, i dont know that) wrong, but i am not responsible for their being wrong coz i only searched them, i dont even know whether these r actually practiced or not. (i hv edited my previous post with X markings, now hv a look n tell me whether they r still wrong n also which ones r usually used)

    the fact that u r not happy with my work kind of made me unhappy coz i put all my effort in searching them.

    n now if u ask me y i posted 20 more instead of 4 (which u wanted) then i was trying 2 help myself out, bcoz i was sure that next time u ll ask me 2 find 4 more n this will go on n on n on.........................................................
    aur main kabhi G chord ki duniya se bahar nahi nikal paungi ;)

    i tried all the 3 positions for G chord which u hv posted n yes all of them sound different. my teacher from whom i was taking my classes earlier (not now) taught me this postion of G chord :

    e||---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    B||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    G||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    D||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    A||---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    E||---|---|-2-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---

    i was very happy with this G chord (since it is easy while changing to C or A or any other chord) until i saw this post here at IGT, where this guy posted a different position for G chord :

    e||---|---|-4-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    B||---|---|-3-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    G||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    D||---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    A||---|-1-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
    E||---|---|-2-|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---

    though there is not much difference in the 2 but all of a sudden i was finding it difficult 2 accept. i mean i hv practiced all the songs with the G chord(having G chord) which my teacher told me. for 2 days i was in a complete mess figuring out which 1 of them is correct, then i thought probably my teacher taught me wrong stuff. finally i decided to search for this chord n the result instead of solving my problem confused me 2 a greater level n my instant rection was OH MY GOD now what.

    alright, now that i hv tried all the 3 that u hv posted, u tell me which is usually preferred. as of now i am practicing few old hindi songs. i am not
    mentioning any of those coz then u ll say this is also wrong. so u bettercome up with ur post as u said containing few songs, thier chords n strumming pattern (coz i still cant figure out by listening).

    reply soon................... :nw: dont make me go crazy after this G chord coz there might b many chord positions for various other chords which i dont know but i need 2 know......................................

    both r correct. till the time both sound same to u.. use either.. the day they start sounding different to your ears.. you will know which one to use where..

    The other thing is dont just accept somethign cause your teacher said so or u found it ina chord chart.. try to figure out why a certain position resolves to a G major or an E major.

    my 2 cents.

  18. Bandbaaja

    Bandbaaja Pronounced Band Baaaa Ja

    Born Scorpio,
    Youre positions are right. Good work on the A
    SO basically everyone reading this post must understand now on.
    That if you leave aside OPEN STRING chords and know about BASIC closed position chords, then you will know that shifting ahead in the fretboard will take you to the next chord.

    For example, the F chord is the first full closed chod you learn.
    Just shift the whole position ONE fret up it is F#
    2 frets up it is G and so on...

    Same way with the D major (the :. position wala)

    and same way with the A major, (see scorpio's post for that)
    Be careful when u want to convert the A to A#.
    If you notice the A major X02220 has the first string open.
    so if you shift your fingers from the 2nd fret to 3rd fret, be sure to make the open E into F.
    meaning XX3331 will be A# (or Bb)
    and XX4442 will be B
    and XX5553 will be C

    The best example to learning voicing of chords is Jaanejaan Dhoondta Phir Raha. Its in Cm.

    Some Moderator, please tell me if instead of posting the chords and positions here, i think I should post a new thread for that.
