:nw: I have a dual boot system.MY windows XP was been infected by virus, therefore I formated the drive on which it was installed. Now the ploblem is that I am Still getting Windows XP as an option in the OS selection menu. How to remove it.
You still get an option, but if you choose that one, nothing happens right?? Its nothing that affects your system. You can remove that option by editing a file in the registry. I don't know much about this, so i cant explain, but the experts will surely help you out.
Yaar there is a .ini file from where u can remove the other (removed) OS name. You can open this file in notepad. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of this file. You have to search this bit.
In your root drive, i.e. C-Drive.. there is a hidden file called BOOT.INI Give me its content... Generally, it should contain the following line: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect Just remove that and that option would vanish, and you wont get any MENU.. but direct loading of the root operating system installed! Following is my boot.ini contents: So paste your similar boot.ini contents here, so that i cant tell exactly what to remove, otherwise, you would mess the entire system! REgards, Zooom..!!
YEah,... even if u remove the "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" walla line from that format,... it would work fine!!
yo dude whatever u do with the boot.ini file don't forget to make a backup of it b'fore making any changes!!!!
Hey Zoomingrocket As you said- [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect C:\="Microsoft Windows"
Why do people just format their computer to remove a virus??? Use Antiviruses to remove them or if you can't quarantine it and ask pros like Zoom on how to remove it. That's better than losing all your files.
andy , sometimes there is no choice left other then formatting ur system , some of the viruses can be really stubborn !!
Oops.. i forgot about this thread... Sorry.... You got to remove this line from your boot.ini Save it and then after reboot.. u wont see any BOOT menu.. it would be directly Win 9x! And yes.. for safety.. before making changes, copy your boot.ini file in some other folder... REgards, Zooom..!!
As far as i know you will continue getting xp in os menu......but if you reinstall xp again , then the newer xp will overwrite the old xp in the os menu....
