i'm 28. built my first stompbox (aron nelson's hornet) with a help of a friend 10 years ago (i knew NOTHING about stompboxes or electronics). it worked for a few minutes and then died. no idea what happened to it or where it went.

i started fooling around on my own in about 2002. it got easier after i spent more time on it. i must have trashed a truckload of circuit boards and components that i killed or were shite in general.... built first tube amp last year only though, after procrastinating for 5-6 years.

now i'm getting kind of fed up of it because it's become more of an OCD (not the overdrive pedal of the same name) than a need-based thing. besides, it doesn't really help you with the women - talk to a chick saying "hey, did you know you can use a 4069 as a VCF?" and you'll see how boring drinking alone can be.

right now, i'm getting more interested in noise pedals - extreme fuzz etc. as well as analog synth DIY. the latter is a hole you can never crawl out of.

don't be embarassed. i can't play at all.

    Lol, interesting.

How does that tube amp play? It's a pretty big thing for most of us here, far beyond many's scope.

Moreover...D'you see yourself doing making custom stomp boxes for a living in the future? Another on the lines of Tulsi, Roy Chvat, or Mohamed Ansar would be really welcome in India.

my first amp? badass. it has one - just one - glorious watt and reminds me that i suffer from tinnitus past the halfway mark. there are no cleans whatsoever, just high gain supersaturated triode sound. great for blues to rock, not advisable for metchul.

cons: it's apparent that it's my first amp - i got confused during the wiring, and some wires cross each other. there are noise problems when the boost gain and volume is maxxed. still, it's a bitchin' lil' chicken pickin' amp.

the design is a famous DIY design by doug hammond called the firefly, i think the schematic and stuff can be found online at www.ax84.com.

here is a youtube clip that shows its capabilities really well (not my amp though): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh-fkgGoQMk

    here is MY amp: https://www.rsjonline.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2825

here is the amp i built immediately after that, to some extent an original design, and generally a mishmash of a few different amps. sound clip (mediafire link) included. if you comment on my shitty playing, i will cut your your nuts off while you sleep and flame you all over these forums.

    https://www.rsjonline.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3430

hmmm... i don't think so, to be honest. custom orders yes, one offs yes, but series production... doubtful. also, i like taking on work that is interesting. if someone approaches me for a clone of an amp, i'd tell him to go ahead and buy the real thing outright. what really excites me is to get into the head of the player and understand the kind of sound he's chasing, and go after that. or to do something innovative and tread less-tested waters (i don't think ANYTHING in guitar amps has been completely untested so far). i was pretty lucky to embark on a seriously ambitious project commissioned to me that involved a seriously complex amp topology. it worked out pretty well on the whole, and i'm getting rid of some of the kinks right now.

stompboxes... yes, if the buyer is willing to pay for the work involved. here's an example of a work (in progress, sadly, turns out that my circuit is extremely temperamental):

there isn't really much money in it either, and i'm not really doing it for the money. i love building amps and am a bit anal about getting the best results i can from the material available to me, and i spend time working stuff out, so i do set a price that i'm comfortable with. not low, not TOO high, and with enough room to make the amp meaningful to both myself and the buyer. i believe takinmg it on as a proper business will kill any and all joy of building amps for me; i don't want to set super-production targets, or cut corners all over the place. if i think it feasible and enjoyable in the future, i would consider it.

also, let's keep in mind the fact that i have only built 5 amps to date. so i still have a long way to go. ansar is far ahead, and roy is WAY ahead.

i'm open to enquiries though, and am essentially fairly uncomplicated :D. PM me if you do want an amp built. stompboxes are problematic because i have limited access to the actual enclosures, but feel free to ask anyway.

you can actually get the right tone and mood for this song from a stranger and a nasty fuzz. i don't even know why homme is using a bad cat when an MG15cd would do just as well or even better.

    i missed this thread.

anyway, flood, what happens when you bust a t00b?
Like I don't carry t00bs in my pocket as I would carry condoms.

SS equipment doesn't get busted that easily/frequently.

PS: This is not to attack the valves, but plainly asking for practical considerations.

    a) When you "bust t00bs", you buy new ones :) They are available at many online stores in US and Europe. Some European stores even ship to India.

    b) You have a misunderstanding there that SS equipment doesn't get busted as easily/frequently as tube. Actually, in the most common scenario of mismatching the output impedance of your output stage to the input impedance of the speakers, an SS power stage would fry much, MUCH quickly then a tube stage.

    c) You're comparing reliability of tubes vs solid states and you say - "Like I don't carry t00bs in my pocket as I would carry condoms."
Do you mean to say Solid state amps is made of condoms?

"O FCK!! Hey fl00d, need your help quick! I spilled some viagra in mypreamp driver man!!!!"
    or...
"Hey d00ds, guess what...I pimped my amp, it was f*ck noisy before!.. now it plays so well with the durexes in the power stage...It's such a waste using them for preventing conception, they should be manufactured only for high gain SS amps!!!"

you buy a new one and stick it right in. it's not really common to "bust" a tube.

every gigging musician using a tube amp keeps a set of tubes in spare, just in case something goes wrong.

on the whole, tubes are a LOT more durable electrically than transistors and especially digital equipment. fry a microprocessor, throw away POD.

the problem is transportation. they are tough, but they are still made of glass. i recommend removing the tubes when moving amps around without roadcases, just to be sure.

fail. if you're posting on this forum, you don't have any use for condoms.

Damnit you beat me to it.

Hey flood any experience with SS amps? My Laney is behaving strangely. Touching the knobs causes the volume (and possibly eq) to start fluctuating. Not at a high frequency but maybe 5-6 times in the span of 5 minutes. There's a possibility of some fungus buildup (if it matters) because I live in Manipal where it rains for 6 months straight. It fluctuates between a normal volume bright sound and a subdued dark sound.

no experience building them but it sounds like you have a case of oxidised pots. manipal can be a real bitch too. you need deoxit, kontakt 60 or similar contact cleaners to take care of it. do NOT use WD40 or similiar lubricants, they're electrical insulators and will only add to the problem. it will require disassembly and spraying the contact cleaner directly into the pot, then giving it a few brisk turns. let the pots dry completely before turning on the amp again.

Disassembly of the entire amplifier? No DC shock to be had?
