That's not true. Only rarely will you find the same chords being played on both guitars or both the piano and guitar. Most musicians believe in small chords and superimpose chords together to get the sound that they do. eg- Synth plays C major Guitarist plays E minor 7th(Not nescessarily the full chord....maybe just a couple of notes or the triad) Bassist plays B Voila...you have a C major 9th sound without even one of the musicians actually playing the full chord.
