An Oddly Placed Gift

You stare at her and she stares back
You smile, and behold, she only stares back
    So beautiful, so...perfect,
    "Could she be mine?"
    The brain, it backs off
as you start thinking from your groin.
For a few moments, reality loses it's power
to the frozen face of a woman,
    that simply stares back.

    Rejected, dejected, somewhere
Lies another girl turning to ether,
For ugly and shy rarely mix together,
Unlikely a place to find a gift,
A gift that lures men to what she's not.
A pity, for this angel with her wand
    and a flash of light,
    Captures all shades and colors,
    from white to black,
for men who hate her and drool as they watch,
the beautiful girl that only stares back.

Oh, that's a new topic, and it has been expressed exquisitely.
    Cheers and reps!

Thank you horsesmouth and alpha1. I'm glad you guys liked it because I'm planning to write here every now and then. You both mentioned 'topic' specifically. You mean a topic unlike romance/love?

No. But because it is a topic that's generally true in practical life. I mean, guys almost always prefer beauty over substance, atleast that's true for casual relationships. How many guys (who can get anyone they want) fall in love with a homely girl rather than a bombshell?

And because I believe its very difficult to express it the way you did, especially thinking from your groin part. (Wait, that isn't censored? Awesome!)

The real reason why this happens is because human beings idiotically started using love as an euphemism for attraction.
    Love at first sight!
What loads of BS. How can it be love?

Attraction is a part of love, but its vice-versa is not always valid.
And differentiating between degrees of fairness, beauty, or body shape in general is prominent among us Indians.
Like the Indian mother: mai to apne bete ke liye gori bahu dhoond ke laungi.

I believe this might have started as a way to select the good gene, to isolate congenital handicaps and augur a healthy species.
Somehow it got distorted to mostly useless physical aspects with respect to survival, like beauty.

I don't know about it being a euphemism. I mean, I don't think people intentionally label their attraction as love to seem less shallow. I think attraction can be a great precursor to love. The problem is when people fail to realize that they are two distinct phases.

Oh yeah - what does the phrase "making love" signify?
And why can't you "make love" with any other person you love (say siblings, friends, ...)?

    True, true.
"Make Love" is indeed a euphemism for ***. Possibly because people who had *** with people they love wanted to give it a different designation. Or it's just a way to make it sound good like you say. But that's not what I was talking about.

I meant to say that it's not necessary that everyone who says he/she is in love, is necessarily only attracted to that person.

    Sorry for the late reply.

  11. very good poetry liked it..
i get a few questions as i read ..isnt love attraction to certain traits of individuals like care, sensitivity??... external beauty isnt just one of it...who is more concerned bout looks a man or a women? cant we say mens eat what they are served beauty first .... love is a hell of a strong feeling better be away from it !!!

I find it hard to get to the crux of your comment. I don't get the sum of it, but I do understand every sentence individually. I am glad this poem spurred some kind of discussion.
As for love, I like to believe there's no running away from it.

I love this poem its so true except for
for men who hate her and drool as they watch,
the beautiful girl that only stares back.
when they realize they can't have the -beautiful- one they settle for the -ugly- one
most guys are pretty desperate and can't afford to be picky so they'll go after anything female
but yeah i really like this poem
