50 watt may be ideal, but you might want to start off with an 18 watt head+1x12 cab. Upgradability and future proofness (you can use that head through a 2x12/4x12 later, or you can put a 50 watt head on the 1x12 (now, will THAT drive? I have my doubts, but I don't see why not.)) + you get your feet wet at not such a huge price. The Sol 18 will also be good for other genres if ever you decide to diversify.

You might not be able to tell the difference till you're experienced enough to know what's lacking.

 

at the end of the day it's your decision but i'll just say here that NOBODY is ready for one and you just take the plunge. the best time to get one is as a beginner, IMHO, because tube amps simply force you to play better. you learn only by doing, finally.

NO. you won't. for sure. i've never gotten to know tones from a POD or amp simulation VST plugins. the only way i got to know about amp tone was playing as many good amps as possible. most emulation simply doesn't get there; it might sound all right in the mix but playing is a different ballgame.

i guess if all you're going for is high gain/djent then one of the newer PODs would be ok, but you need to work with it too. advice: go out and play as much stuff as possible to get a clear picture.
