The middle class has, in the past few decades, stayed quiet because oppression did not directly affect them. The poor have been trodden on but only isolated cases have caused uproar in the middle class (that too usually force-fed by the media). Perhaps a time will come when we will no longer accept what we have been....that time isn't now.

Also, e-outrage is the Indian equivalent of slacktivism. The comments on ndtv amuse me no end but really, I suppose I'm a part of it all.

The best part is, the girl who liked the controversial facebook status was also arrested...
whatever happened to freedom of speech..

The politicians have replaced the kings and aristocrats of the earlier era.
How can you expect a freedom of speech (which is the most basic of all the rights to freedoms)?
Once again the Indian public is to be blamed, by allowing them to attain such state.
(Of course the servile attitude rammed into Indian throats at a young age doesn't really help the situation)

Compare this with the Benelux and the Scandinavian countries.

And I agree about "the time is not now" - the exact reason why I feel all these movements against corruption will not succeed.
The middle class is economically "better off" than what it was decades ago. So these ppl have nothing to add. And they will never counter anything.

The rich have fun using corruption to their benefit - so they will never oppose.

Now comes the poor and "down trodden" cattle class. Unless they take up the cudgels, nothing is going to change in this country. But then they seem to be more interested in Ganpati festivals ... so we can all expect their actions and reactions ...

    haha...all the best.!

...and compared with real GRE forums, this is a better place for discussing GRE topics. For once, intellectuals here like to talk about something real... This place helped me a lot..

(Special thanks: bjr, alpha1, guitarplayer729, wylder, and to others who I missed, them too..)

no buddy...not everyone has the courage to stand up and fight, especially when you're buried deep inside a hole, and you've to pay everything you have to get out...
    I don't...

India is very resistant to change, most of us havent even been able to get over the fact that Mahabharata and Ramayana though very true and meaningful are ultimately works of fiction.

that is western school of thought.. they consider these epics a work of fiction..
and i do have an argument to go with it. they cannot entirely be works of fiction!
the geographical locations and archeology prove that!
the locations that have been presented in tose books exist even today, some of them even by the same names.

Yeah so do the locations in harry potter, twilight and most of the Dan Brown books, that doesnt make them real.

Those epics might be real, but there are different versions in different cultures.
Read Chariots of the Gods by Erich Von Daniken if you want to investigate it further.

What we mean by fiction is not that there were kings, who fought with each other, some had several wives, some drank wine, some wanted to kill their brothers, some wanted total control etc ...
All of the above are pretty generic characteristics of human beings living in societies.
So obviously someone somewhere will always fit the description. And there is no wonder that such things might have actually happened and got chronicled.

What we refer to as fiction is that someone came flying through the air from Lanka.
Some one created a bridge to Lanka.
    ... and so on

Anyway the above has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
What happened in the Bombay "bandh" is something which had full support from half the public ... and the rest half didn't have the balls to counter the first half. The ones who "showed balls" had actually no intentions, but mistakenly ... turn of events ... they became martyrs. The the best part is played by the gutless media, who portrayed this shutdown because of "lack of balls" as shutdown because of "mark of respect".

And this is how Bombay has been for decades now. (after the rise of Shiv Sena)
Police acting like a mere toddler in ALL cases ... (check out the past history of riots in our economic capital)

in the indian history there is a mention of 4 vedas.
    1.The Rigveda
    2.The Yajurveda
    3.The Samaveda
    4. the atharvaveda

all of these are penned down in sanskrit which isa pretty tough language.
for the first 10,000 years nobody cared to pen them down, parents narrated them to their children, they learnt them all by heart and then passed it on to the next generation.
gradually they realized that the upcoming generation's memory was nt as powerful as the first one and thn it became a necessity to pen vedas down.

now, the point here is that if memory was one such thing and human being has evolved from an animal, we cannot completely rule out the possibility that humans could have some special powers or ability at that time which do not exist now..

Maybe they came from outer space and were already evolved or had reached the stage that humans might reach 1000s years later.
And then we humans(which were less evolved) considered them GODS and wrote stories which changed over time.

i gave an example to strengthen the argument .. a "valid" example..

Now now, this topic is derailing from the issue at hand, i only presented the fact to tell how indians are super sensitive about religion and communal topics, and hence these arrests are nothing surprising. And that this is unlikely to change in the near future.
