Looks like people are busy with Diwali preparations. Not much interactions seen in the forum.

Presenting the tabs for the song Metti Oli Kaatrodu En Nenjai Thalaata - A super hit IR song.

This is a 'Special Song' - Special in the sense

    1. Male playback singing for a song with 3 actresses in the background
    2. IR's mesmerizing voice
    3. SJ's pleasant humming - Humming comes as a BGM in the song
    4. Catchy tune and a wonderful use of the raga - The raga notes are completed exploited

    The song is set in 'Jog' raga which goes like s g3 m1 p n3 S / S n2 p m1 g3 m1 g3 s g2 s.

Because of the presence of both the 'g's in the descending, I am confused as to whether the song is in major or minor scale.

The specialty of the raga is the use of both the 'g's and this is well used in this song.

I think the song starts in C minor and moves soon to D# major, which very much belongs to C minor family - I would request Rajesh to confirm this please.

But definitely the pallavi of the song starts with minor scale notes. The raga can be played starting in a C Octave as under:

    E---------------7--8---8--6---------------------------------E
    B-----5--6--8----------------8--6---5--6--5----------------B
    G--5------------------------------------------5---8--5-----G

The tabs are given taking 's' as 'C'.

Pick, play and enjoy the song .............. and please do post your comments............... Sathya

Thanks Rajesh for a very quick reply. My understanding is correct. I sensed C Minor moving to Eb and then coming back to C Minor towards the end. The C Major things is quite a surprise for me - I could not visualise. May be introducing C Major is the trump card here in this song. IR's songs always have some surprise move in the middle near charanam. I will try these chords.............. Sathya

Thanks Rajesh for the chords. One kind request, pls dont post the chords in the tabs thread, many like me may not read the tabs thread. I don't know how many I might have missed like this. I just visited this thread to read what Sathya has to say about this song, one of my ATF. Pls post it in the main page.

    Hi Sathya,

    Jog is S G3 M1 P N3 S // S N2 P M1 G3 M1 G3 S R3 S

G2 & R3 are enharmonic; so major and minor chord for root note in the song is very clear

    A Major Chord is S, G3 , P
    A Minor Chord is S, G2 or R3 , P

since both G3 & R3 are available in this scale; major and minor chords is evident

This song cannot be categorised in Major or Minor Scale

The below given ragas don't fall under major and minor scales due to R3 & G3 presence(except chalanatai and rasikapriya all others raga's carnatic songs are rare)

    Yagapriya
    Ragavardhini
    Gangeyabhushani
    Vagadheeswari
    Shulini
    Chalanata
    Sucharitra
    Jyoti swarupini
    Dhatuvardani
    Nasikabhushani
    Kosalam
    Rasikapriya

Songs with R1 & G1 cannot be categorized as major or minor as G1 and M1 are separated by 3 semitones and G1 is Major second and M1 is perfect fourth; no major 3rd or minor 3rd, sus2 chords will work with root note

Thanks a lot Thamboo. It is quite a lot of new information for me to strengthen my understanding. I am at LKG level as far as carnatic ragas are concerned and your reply will certainly boost my self learning confidence and help me in exploring more about the relationship between raga and western music......
