    Hello,

my friend has been playing his Electric Givson guitar for almost a year now. He keeps it in a very pristine-like condition, unlike me :D

So, we got to jam together this sunday, and cud work out a few Nirvana songs.but the overall tonal quality that his guitar produced was, lets say, not quite catchy. I gave him my acoustic and he played that one great. :)

Afterwards, when I got to thinking, I realized maybe if he cud just change his strings, his guitar wud sound much better??
Thats coz I replaced my strings one month prior with bronze coated ones, and they sound great.

My friend had told me that he has not replaced one string in his guitar since he bought it.

So, am I right in thinking that his problem can be solved by changing his strings??

    please share ur views :D

To an extent yes, but remember that even with new strings a Givson can only sound at best "ok". BTW, my first guitar was a Red/Black Givson Super Deluxe.

Changing the strings will affect the tone by 10% or even less tyhats it

U need to have good Pickups on the guitar....
If you dont want to change the pickups make sure u have good pedals or a processor to get the desired tone.

oh yeah, i forgot, its an electric .:D
Pickup matters a lot in them .

Any suggestion for strings and some affortable pickups??

Try Daddario strings. I like their feel better than Ernie Ball. IMO the pickups will cost more than the guitar itself. Your friend is better off buying a electric guitar (pre-owned) for the same price as pickups.

Why dont u buy a good processor instead of changing the pickups. That would help a lot.

As far as strings are concerned i use VAPA brand (140/-) on all my guitars..They last for 5-6 months without rust but with proper maintainence..

Actually, i was wanting a review on Vapa since they are quite cheap. How do they feel/sound compared to D'addarios?

d'addarios rust faster than vapa Thats what i hav experienced. And For the Price vapa is a killer brand. Sound feel playability durability all great.

Dont buy from bajaao..U can order VAPA 0.09 from bajaao. Coz thats 140/- which is right.
BUT VAPA (0.10) = 190/- which is crap. I mailed them asking why the price difference and they said thats the way it is. And the same day i went to Albertos and bout VAPA(0.10) for 140/-

I'd rather buy a brand new guitar instead of replacing the pickups on a givson guitar... The pickups would actually cost more than the guitar itself...

90% of the liveliness and quality of your tone depends upon your amp, at least that's what I'd like to think... A good amp with 12" speakers can make a crap guitar sound great and a bad amp can make a gibson sound like a givson...

    alpha1 I BLUES!

The only grip I have with my GiVson is pickups - which sound noisy and weak.
Other than that - rest is pretty fine. (action, intonation, unplugged sound, there is some fret buzz, but live-able).

Processor/amp may be able to mask the weak tone of giVson.

The real problem with the Givson and Grason guitars are their unrealistic fretboards... All of them have 21 frets instead of 22 or 24....

What's so unrealistic? ... Many fenders also come with 21

Only Mex strats I guess.... Never liked them anyways...

The original Stratocaster designed by Clarence Leonidas Fender had 21 frets i guess. Dave Murray uses a strat with 21 frets..

Depends upon player's choice what suits him and what doesn't... For the kind of music I play, 21 frets is downright inadequate and 24 frets is more than what is required...

I have often come across solos and runs that require the 22nd fret and never more... Moreover, I don't prefer the 24 fretted guitars because the lower frets are difficult to play runs over due to the widths of jumbo frets for my short fingers...

I am simply comfortable with a 22 fret medium sized fretboard, every guitar I own or would like to own or play regularly has one and will have one...

Besides, the reason I feel 21 frets are inadequate is because many of the guys around are interested in covering rock in rock instrumentals and metal shred solos.. And as I have said before, I have come across a lot of instances where you will need the 22nd fret, and especially in these very genres... Maybe while playing rhythm guitar, the higher frets will be of no use....
