    Attempt 1 - Glasgow Kiss

An attempt to Glasgow kiss.. Some parts in the song sound easy but they are killer. Biggest challenge was to play it without any mistakes....But just couldn't play it right....Its my first attempt, hopefully next one wud be much cleaner and with less mistakes.....
Both the solos are improvised lol...hopefully they are not sounding way to off the scale!!!!

Attempt 1 Glasgow Kiss - YouTube

(I have practiced and played the main riff of the song incorrectly...Its not down picking..infact it shud have been alternate picked to get that proper sound)

How do you learn a song? Do you use tabs, video lessons or do you learn to play them by ear? It'll be helpful if you share your experiences.

    Sure here is go:-

In this particular song only one piece is learnt by referrin to the tabs(The fast run that starts from 3rd fret 6th string and ends on the 1st String..It was just too difficult to figure it out...And similarly position that starts on 15th Fret 6th string and ends on 1st String..thats it)..Rest all is by listening and figuring it out..thats the reason i mess up on most of the notes and i just try to make them sound like the original but they are actually played differently in the original song.

    Step 1:-
I must have listened to the song for atleast 50 times before picking it up. I live with the song, for the entire week untill i finish figuring it out..(Guess what even my maid started humming that song after a week...lol :)))..And she asked me why do u play the same song all the time.....hahaha...Cudnt make her understand..

    Step 2:-
When i sit for practicing i reduce the tempo of the song to identify how the lick/riff is played. i listen to smaller parts at a time..Say 10secs at a time...Try to figure that out and once satisfied then move ahead with the song...

    Step 3:-
Once u get the start lick/intro of the song. Trying to identify in which scale it is played. Generally the backing track give u an idea of the scale..This song is played in A Major/F#m scale...And F#m Pentatonic scale has come in handy in this song.

    Step 4:-
The parts that i am just not able to figure out after trying for 1000 times then i refer to the tabs...But even if i am close to what is sounding in the original..I dont refer to the tabs....Its just that u dont have to play what is played in the original song note by note....I completely believe in improvising parts to our capabilities.

    Step 5:-
If u cant figure out a tough solo then learn small pieces of it or the main riff of that solo and include that in ur improvisation..That helps..and ofcourse play with what scale is going on in the background...

    Hope it helps a little...

Guess what 2 years back...I had tried playing this song....And i had failed badly!!! I was just able to play few slow parts in this song...I had decided at that point that i will do this song someday..

I am still struggling to play any song with few mistakes and with feel.....This is something that i am aiming for .... And i have found a way to do that.

Now my guitar playing sounds OK in this song because of Distortion and heavy beefy tone. Infact it covers up all my mistakes..But seriously if u see me playing this song in a clean Tone..U will kick me on my butts...I have decided to play any song in Clean tone so that it doesnt hide my mistakes. Atleast i learn to play with Feel and few mistakes this way. And then turning the distortion ON wud be amazing....Hopefully i am able to achieve this in a few years time!!!

    Good Job Nikhil......you rock....

To add to what you mentioned in how to learn songs, or learnt this song.....I would want to add something to this....
    1) Always try and learn by a person or say some tutorial on YouTube, the idea is to get to learn from a real person to get to understand the timing, scales etc......it is a very bad idea to mug up or learn using guitar tabs.....!!!!!
    2) Learning by ear is the best, but difficult way in learning any tune, but then as time passes by, it kind of gets easy, atleast you can grab some parts which arent very complicated by ear.

No Gyan Session......I thought i should share something, its been a while since i posted on IGT :D

As for me, I hardly use stationary tabs now a days... What I really use for learning up songs (I'm not into that too much since I'm still into improving and learning new techniques and stuff), I use Guitar Pro tabs and Lick Library videos..

Nice cover! As you said , distortion and heavy beefy tone saved you . Man! you did a great job it's an 8 min song, you can do a lot better if you try and make minimum movements as possible .

    Quick question...
how did you sync audio and video or did you record audio through video recorder?
also which video recorder did you use?

i used my Nokia 701 for RECORDIN. Actual hd video came out really well which was 192mb. I converted that to flv and the size reduced to 60mb So did the tone and quality went down

what made u think that "always wit me always With u' Wud b an easier song? Infact it is one of the toughest song to cover. Jus listen to the way the riffs are played on OFF BEATS. Its Damn difficult dude. TougHER than glasgow kiss

Well, .Yes, live versions are hard. But studio will be easier.

    Beg to differ, dude.....

Try guitar pro or video lessons... AWMAWY comes nowhere near to Glasgow Kiss when it comes to difficulty, IMO... I've noted that this is the first Satriani song that most players prefer to cover (also Super Colossal and Cryin').... Yes I agree its tricky to judge the backing beat but when you monitor the songs while playing them, that should hardly be a concern....
But then again, you may have a different opinion...

IMO, the most challenging Satriani songs are Summer Song and Surfing With The Alien, probably the same league as Glasgow kiss.... All of them involve the use of a wide variety of techniques which take time getting used to.... Some other real challenging G3 guitarist songs are Tender Surrender, Arpeggios From Hell and Cliffs of Dover...
