Need an amp. Desperately!

Hi everyone. The title is self explanatory so I'll get straight to the point. I'm looking for a an amplifier (preferably tube) for under Rs 17000.
I intend to play some metal so I want reasonably good cleans and the amp should be able to handle gain well. Think 'enter sandman' by metallica and the solo on stairway to heaven.

My min requirements are a 3 band EQ, 2 channels and around 15W (tube amp standards).

I came across the laney cub 12r and the bugera v22 but both are out of my price range a bit and I'm not convinced they are what I want.

Please someone suggest a good amp and where I can get it from! Any and all opinions are welcome.

PS: I have a Greg-bennet TB1 guitar that has single coils, 1 of which I intend to replace with a humbucker...

 

also does anyone know whether be3 amplifiers are good? the 18W stuff...And does it handle metal well? Please Help!!

 

I've been looking into the be3 solution 18 live also . It sounds really good from the samples. I don't think there are any other tube amps that fall within your range, unless you want to go for a tube single unit from Blackstar. The HT-Dual sounds wonderful

 

I agree. I just checked on the price of the be3 solution 18... 30k. Shoot me.

Thanks for the info man, but to be truthful I've never liked the sound from the vox ac4tv... It doesn't really suit stuff like rock and metal (in my opinion). You wouldn't happen to know anyone selling something like a be3 solution 18 or so cheap would you?

actually 5 watt tube may be a lil too little...see i'll have to play in my church and the drummer is real loud. We have to put him in a glass cage and he still manages to drown out everyone else.

 

a 100w amp is just twice as loud as a 10w amp... low wattage gives less headroom but it's pretty damn loud... try one if you haven't.. if you run it using a 4x12 cabinet it's gonna give you some insane sound...

 

Wattage has got very little to do with loudness.
I just wish all guitarists would grow up and try to understand about sound systems.

The loudness is determined by TWO things: Speaker sensitivity = dB at 1m with 1W signal.
And the amp power = Watts.

The more sensitive your speakers are the more dB loudness you can produce even with smaller amp.

And just to illustrate the point (and mine too) to Akshay:

If you speakers are 84 dB/W sensitive (= poor sensitivity speakers), then if you feed your speakers with 1 W amp, you can produce 84 dB at a distance of 1m.

But you want an ear shattering 90 dB.
So what you do?

Two options:
1. Either get a speaker with higher sensitivity (=90 dB/W). Easily available.
2. or get more wattage. (84 dB at 1W => 87 W at 2W => 90 dB at 4W). Looks easy, but more difficult to do when you are dealing with hundreds of watts!

(which means if you got say 84 dB at 100W, then to get 90dB - you would required 400W amp!!!)
a meager 3 dB increase for every doubling of power.

Keep in mind, the tube sound is got when your tubes start behaving non-ideally (= non-linear). This happens only when they are driven beyond the comfort zone. The lower wattage the amp is, the more easy to get distortion at low volume.

 

Ok point taken rickkkyrich and alpha1. So what would you suggest then? You know my requirements and my budget. I know I'm gonna have to make a lot of compromises in terms of features. Which amps would be good then?

You should look out for Peavey Valveking. Peavey make some real good amps for Metal. A friend of mine uses the 100W head with a 2x12 cab and he is pretty much satisfied with it.
The Valveking sells for around 25k new (for 50W 1x12 combo) in the market. This is the price in Delhi, dunno about Mumbai.
