Here's an instrumental that I have been working on. Please do let me know your thoughts on what you think is nice(if any) and what needs work on.

    MP3 Player SoundClick

Just came up with the chops for the second solo last night hence the sloppy playing there. I know I am a bit off time in quite a few places as the thing was done in one take and I need more practice.

I really liked it! You have great melodies and a nice tone. Like you said, you were a bit off at times and the second solo sometimes sound a little like a practice run during the arpeggios (especially the two big sweeps). Even so, it was really nice to listen to.

Melodically, I think one of the things you can look at is moving up and down the fretboard vertically a bit more...you seem to be moving horizontally more at this point? In any case, I hope you post more often in here.

Also, what software are you using to record this?

I loved ur playing style...Melodic solos and pretty fluent over the fretboard.. And i loved the guitar tone..

    Backing rhythm is good too.

Yeah and i am sure with practice the 2nd part wud be much better

Its an inspiring tone/solo..Reminded me of Parikramas - But It Rained solo piece..

    Welll played.....

    Thanks for the review.

As you guessed, the sweep arpeggio is my cover when I run out of ideas. I wanted the second solo to be a bit more technique oriented with less emphasis on melody to take out the monotony. I guess I'll try to fill up the wait between the sweeps for better continuity. Me losing the beat after that didn't help either I guess especially because moving from the four count to sevens while soloing is a PITA...

I have always had the tendency to stick to neck positions. I need to work on diagonal scale runs to change positions.

Below is the signal chain for the recording:
Ibanez RG -> Tube Zone OD -> Delay -> Laney LC15 -> SM 57 (close to grill, 3/4 way between center of speaker and outer edge) -> M-Audio FastTrack -> Audacity
The backing track is exported from Guitar Pro and mixed post recording.

But It Rained? Thanks, I love that solo too and I'm flattered :)

    Mix:
Bring the guitar more to the front. Cut some of the low end, and add a little bit of high end to your lead tone. It sounds a little muddy right now.

    Technique/Musicality:
    Same as bjr said.

You didn't listen to the rest (2:57 secs) of it?

Maybe there was some issue with the site earlier? The whole song is 03:20 in length and its playing fine on my machine.
Could you maybe try refreshing the page if it shows an error?

Wylder - give the Song URL, so that ppl can choose whether to listen to hi-fi or lo-fi.

I listened to this yesterday and really liked the ideas and the flow.
Of course you have said it your self that timing was off at some points.
To me it sounded like you are making up a lot of stuff on the go. (some "sub-second" lag between the rhythm and leads)
I believe if you re-record the leads, it would be perfect.

(LOL@ all this coming from a guy who cannot even play simple pentatonics on time)

Well, about the tone, I am more of Marshalesque tone guy.
Bright, crunchy, soaring/searing leads type (think Scorpions).
So I prefer not talking about the tone. :)

My artist page URL: SoundClick artist: Wylder - I am a amateur artist just getting started with home recording. This is my first effort to get somet

I figured after putting the mix together that the guitar tone is too 'warm'.
I guess I need to position the mic closer to the center of the speaker. For live playing, I put the mic at dead center of the speaker so that it cuts through the mix better though it sounds a tad more gritty.

I wasn't really making the stuff up on the go for the most part (I would love to claim I was) but yes, I do lack practice.

I just got my recording gear. I have a few ideas that i need to work on. So I am trying to get all my ideas on record first before actually perfecting them so that I don't forget them. But I could use all the suggestions I can get from you guys when I do rework it.

BTW, I do love the Marshall tones too, but only for gritty rhythms (Angus Young type). For solos though I love the Mesa type smooth and super compressed (think John Petrucci) tones.

Yeah, I need to brighten the guitar tone a bit to allow it to cut through as thehundredthone pointed out.

The backing track was created in Guitar Pro software. Check Post#5 in this thread for details on gear and setup... 'The First Rain' was entirely played on keys.

    :) Thanks for the compliment

I hope you get an opportunity to go to a clinic by Victor Wooten. I did and I am in awe of the man to this day. He had musical wisdom that I cannot hope to achieve in the next 100 years. He was a world class bass player since he was about 9... And that's just one of many such people as Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Shawn Lane etc who have been the elite among the pros for ages now...

We are all just tiny proud goldfishes basking in a bowl, ignorant about the many blue whales out there in the ocean... :)
Besides, if I had to make my living out of music I'd be terribly broke and miserable... So yes, I am an amateur...
