    a good distortion pedal
u need to know pedal toning, harmonics(squealies), shredding-not just fast alt picking, legato and many other things
    Edit:- Tapping also

Just get a Boss Mt-2 and start playing the lower E string open style with palm muting ...
    Something like:

    E -0----0----0----0-----
    all notes palm muted.

And viola you have mastered 50% of metal music!

You may even rip off the higher strings like B and E.

Learn the phrygian mode and arabic scale to start with. Palm muting is a must thing to learn.

and what about galloping picking, sweep picking,tapping...

,phrygian mode???i've heard metal people use more of aeolian modes...

is Arabian scale=harmonic minor or melodic minor?

i just cant get decent tones from my guitar...may be because i dont do palm muting...i really like the scooped high shrieking tone played by kirk hammet...but his solos have so much of clarity on them...though they are not palm muted

i get some wierd sounds whenever i play some open chords in distorted tones

i have a habit of keeping my right hand in an upright position so that they dont touch the strings...and whenever i put it near the floating bridge it presses the bridge so hard that it changes the pitch :(

Solos are generally not palm muted - because you don't give the strings a chance to ring an vibrate when you shred.
But when you play chords, you give ample time to strings to vibrate and resonate. And usually these are played on thicker strings - which make it worse.
And you put overdrive on top, which make it even worse.
    Hence, you mute the strings.

Full Chords will sound bad on distortion if your strings are even slightly out of tune. And if the intonation is not good.
Usually you tend to play only the first second third notes (= 3 strings) rather than all 6 strings.

Dont get befuddled with the hordes of new terms like speed picking, licking, pissing etc ...
They are just terms - and you would wonder why ppl get so exciting about them - when its only something which naturally and inutitively has to be adhered to (while playing that way).

You know the best way of learning a genre?
By learning few typical songs of those genre - note by note.
(you will come to learn every one of those big terms that you used in the post above)

    galloping is triplets
u play one note as DUD pattern and it occupies 1 beat
sweep picking is sweeping your pick among the strings
tapping is using ur right hand(left if left handed) to play another note on the fret board alongside with your left hand notes
phrygian is also a scale(i dont know its theory) but it sounds more deep and evil type in metal
i would post a riff using the d-phrygian mode in a few days(after my exams)
