hey people i screwed my acoustic guitars intonation (( a few days back i did 1.5 down step tuning coz the higher frets action was too high ...so i thought if i loosen the strings a bit then the neck will move in backward direction thereby reducing the string action...after two three days i tuned the guitar as per standard tuning but now the 5th and 6th strings have become a bit flat(tone wise) ...its a semi acoustic model hence it has lower bridge height adjustment rollers...but both the rollers are set to zero position so even if i move them the action will increase...so all i want to know is where can i get a good luthier who can fix it up and will also charge less...i stay in chamrajpet bangalore...if there are any nearby luthiers please let me know.have heard of bobby but he stays too far from my place plus he charges alot...btw will changing the strings help.? Thanks in advance
Do you mean to say that the curvature of your guitar's neck has changed because you just slackened the strings for a few days? (And thus changed the action of the strings permanently) I find it hard to believe! Other than that, intonation will change if the length changes (not possible again), or if you change the strings to a different gauge.
no no no!!!!!what i said was my guitars action on the higher frets were pretty high(i know its normal but they were too high )i havent changed the strings coz just 3 months back i purchased the guitar...i told the people to install 13's gauge strings which i prefer...and to set the truss rod accordingly so they did....2,3 days back i did 1.5 step down tuning to reduce the tension caused by the strings so that the neck moves downward thereby reducing the action(if the neck moves upward then the string action will increase and vice versa).....i know its a long process but i got frustrated with that lower tuning and again did the standard tuning.....i.e E B G D A E ... but now the lower E and D Strings INTONATION is totally screwed the open strings note is not matching with the 12th fret as well as the lower E sounds a bit flat when compared to the 1st E string(not unison but pitch wise)...... one thing i have noticed is when i hold the neck and rotate it clockwise (look from the guitars body side)i know its a bit weird but then the intonation problem is gone......frm the next time i wont buy a local made guitar...was planning to get a local made indian brand bass guitar(coz of low budget) but now after this i have changed my mind..... (( i bought this guitar from kolkata but nw m in bangalore....so was asking for some good luthier who charges less....i just dont want to throw this guitar
That's exactly what my disbelief was about: your guitar's intonation changed because you slackened the strings and then brought 'em back to standard tuning after few days. Looks like your truss rod has suddenly become more pliable : Which means the action would've also increased now. And thus it has screwed the intonation.
are you sure...coz i havent heard of this before...then whats the solution...if what you said is true then why my electric guitar is okay...i do drop D tune sometimes on it and then again after few days do standard tuning as per my requirements...
FIRST OF ALL. 1. Please stop using the SMS lingo on internet. 2. Second, please use punctuation that we all studies in English classes back at the school. Paragraphs are also important. 3. I have straightaway said that I can't believe that your guitar's intonation would change simply because you reduced the tension in your strings for a few days and then brought it back to original value. Now your electric guitar doesn't lose its intonation when you change tunings. And it is expected. Your acoustic guitar does - and this is unexpected. 4. Next I said that it means your acoustic guitar neck has become more bent - which must've raised the action. HAS THIS HAPPENED?
well i am sorry yes the neck has slightly rotated in clockwise direction(if you see from the guitars body side)
Post the pictures of your guitar neck if the rotation is prominent.. - How old is that guitar? - Is the guitar of a very cheap quality? - Are you a rough handler of the instrument? Nothing should happen to the guitar neck ideally if u are tuning it within the range of E standard
hardly 6 months...i will try to upload the pics ...btw how to upload pics? its an indian brand guitar semi acoustic indian brand so cheap quality bought it from a guitar factory in kolkata i play it almost every day ...

tried pretty hard to click this pic ...but anyways hope u can make out this......this is the back portion of the guitar where the maple neck joints the body of the guitar... a gap has been formed near the place where the neck and the body meets....i guess thats what is creating problems......my intonation is okay but the lower sixth strings "E" sounds a bit flat when compared to the first "E" string ....it sounds perfect only when i forcefully try to fill the gap by rotating the neck and placing it into the slot....then the lower "E" will correspond the 1st "E" string
Wow..The image is not that clear but i guess i see around 1-2 mm gap..is that the one?....But i think i understand what u mean. Dude take it to a luthier may be u need some truss rod adjustment and if there is a crack u need to get it fixed!!!
today i went to reynolds...they said the truss rod need some adjustments...they gonna charge 250 bucks for that...the luthier also said that maybe the problem has occured due to the higher gauge strings fitted with this guitar...so he recommended changing the strings....anyways he'll be returning back my guitar on monday.lets hope for the best
finally got my guitar back...that luthier was a jerk...he somehow managed to fix the intonation problem...but he couldnt lower the action...and moreover the sides of the frets have come out of the fretboard and they are scratching my fingers...i told him to file them but he said if he files them the paint will come out and then again he has to repaint the sides of the neck...his repairing charge was 250 bucks which i didnt give . i only paid 110 for the new reynolds brand acoustic strings...i dont want to spend anymore on this guitar...i will rather buy a new one (a solid top) rock on \m/
