I love that movie! I had never cared to watch it until last year and that too because I've been getting increasingly aware of media and the monster it seems to be....I'm not sure if it's always been this way or has it just started getting more obvious? I also wonder whether the movie was made before the reality TV boom or after? If it was before, I am really in awe of the person who made it....if after, still a great concept.

Increasingly aware in what context? Its their job to sell their product in what way they can..considering the fierce competition, they're driven to do extremes like us.We do the same in our way.. But ofcourse we don't kill people, or drive them to death whatsoever. As for the movie, its so old, I doubt if reality tv was even present that tym. Or maybe just a neo-natal stage. But its really great thinking. Everything about it is perfect.

No, not that way....in how the media can control us and that we really have no escape. I know I probably sound like a conspiracy theorist at this point but it really seems to work. In Germany, the only news I get of India comes from ndtv online....I'm sure there are better sources but I am lazy and do not hunt for one (plus it's familiar). So I read these articles and I sometimes think I see a very deliberate bias for or against something....I don't catch it all the time but after the first time, I've started trying to catch it and it seems to be getting more and more frequent. Of course, it's possible that a lot of it is just in my head....say, for example, the Anna Hazare issue. Over the few months after his protest, each of his "aides" (if you will) seemed to be targetted in sequence and taken apart and the media played a fairly large hand in it. I catch biases fairly easily in cricket because I've followed it most of my life.

You could say that media works to sell and that changes according to what people want to see....I wonder if that is still true? The media would work that way if they thought they were in danger of losing out to something else....I wonder if there is something else they can lose out to? Will people not switch on the TV after they get back home from a hard days work? Or will bored housewives not watch a saas bahu serial on a Tuesday afternoon? And all of these entities are also online so will you get away from them? will you want to?

I saw my first episode of a Chuck Lorre production a few nights ago and I was suddenly attracted by a message at the end of the show...it only shows up for a few seconds at the end but it pretty much captured a lot of what I was thinking. And now I'll watch his shows for the vanity card at the end! I thought it was brilliant:

Also, apologies for directing all my conversations into one single meaningless direction but it's what I'm thinking about a lot of late....this will end soon, I will wake up. And now back to regular thread broadcast:

I will keep adding to the thread with one great and one terrible movie at a time.

    An all time favourite movie:

Maine Pyar Kiya- I love the music. I know none of it is original but that is no reason to not like it. I like S.P. Balasubramaniam's voice. I like Salman Khan and Bhagyashree and I love the Dil Deewana song. I think happy endings are nice :')

    An all time terrible movie:

Baaghban- I hate it when movies exaggerate everyday life and make an extended soap opera (or extended sitcoms). Baghbaan would probably make a great TV show to air at 9 pm Mon-Thu on starplus but why must they show it every week on a different movie channel? and why must my father watch it and then stare at me balefully?

    ooh, next!

    An all time favourite:

Dogville: I think this has to be one of the most powerful movies I have seen. It started my recent bout of morbidity. It is the story of this little town of Dogville, in the middle of nowhere, and its good, god fearing people and how the kindly take a girl (Nicole Kidman) into their midst when she has no where else to go.

    A terrible terrible movie:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II: I have disliked the Harry Potter movie series and watched every one of them but none compared to this one. And why is it always available to watch on the plane ride back home?

aww, I loved the books </3 What didn't you like about them?

and you should watch Dogville, the acting is brilliant! And it's a slow movie and probably very different from any movie that you've seen in terms of setting. If you're really bored, it's teh best time to watch it because the first 20 minutes makes you want to switch it off.

well ..coz maybe ther's toooooooooooooooooooo much of fiction and fantasy ..
i prefer a mixture of both of them.. i can bear with them..they are a good read.. but still i dunno ..maybe not my taste..
and books are mostly better than the movies..i mean the movies wich are based on books.. .

    ok..ill see dogville..soon enough :)

You're right... Btw I did notice that rarely one of us discusses about hindi movies in similar topics... I didn't even try to think of a hindi movie...Btw, my parents too like baghban, back then, even I had to watch it a few timesBut its not just a daily soap, consider how many parents are regularly abandoned by children? Though exchanging houses is quite possibly not true... But this is like any other movie, reality is exaggerated. If you're talking about rona-dhona, i find it pretty pathetic too. Well, my best: Taare zameen par, by far the most meaningful, plus its happy ending..And the list of pathetic ones is so long, I'd not even start..take for eg. Toonpur ka superhero.Probably we should cut the discussion to movies that have been popular (or grossed some xxxx million maybe?).............-....ahhh...why the hell is my phohe not supporting the 'enter' key?
