Newbie - Noobie here :) Looking for friends who can help me on learning Guitar!!!!!

Hello Friends....

I am Pavan from Pune. Bought a new acoustic Guitar - Granada. Can you please let me know if it is absolutely necessary for one to join in classes to learn Guitar or we can do that sitting at home checking the Youtube videos or our Forum. I am asking this coz I for now cannot afford to join any classes.

So I look forward for your answers and any of your contributions (teaching tips) to help me out in this.

I really love to learn Guitar.

Joining classes certainly helps but you can learn yourself as well... There's plenty of stuff on the internet... just be sincere and you'll learn fast.. Practice is the key...Start by simply doing fingering exercises to gain dexterity, then try major minor scales and chords... Good Luck !

Thank you very much for the reply. I am for now trying to learn it by myself (it vl be my sincere effort).

But can u plz suggest me on some gud online sites....I am fed-up vt so many sites.....gimme me one site reference so that I can follow that forever...

I can't say any site in particular but these might help you.. Depends on which one you find useful .. spend sometime with them and understand things..

Join classes....Dont try to learn on ur own atleast during the first 6months - 1 years(time may vary depending upon how gud ur teacher is)..U wud be confused and spending lot of unnecessary time if u try and learn on ur own.
learn by urself only if the following is true for u:-
-no funds
-no time
-no good teacher nearby

 

I don't think joining a teacher initially will help you much.. Teachers tend to bore the n00bs initially.. they teach stuff that's too theoretical.. IMO learn on your own for a while... then join classes to make the most of it..

 

Probably the teachers u have faced are making u think in that way..My teachers initially have been wonderful...
and ultimately it depends upon U and not ur teacher to keep urself motivated....If u think u cud learn by urself and yet you joned a class then class is definitely an added advantage and addition to what u will be learning on ur own..

Along with class you got to keep learning side by side by urself as well..Class and self learning go hand in hand...Thats how u wont be bored and u wud know what u r playing is correct and u wud understand every bit of it....

FYI my students simply adore me(not kiddin)....But you are right when teaching bcums a business a teacher fails to deliver it on time and in short span.....

 

Thats why i mentioned it as a 3rd bullet point which is really very important...

First of all...I would like to thank Ricky for providing me those valuable links. They are quite good.

Thank you very much for your valuable thoughts. I appreciate them. But I cannot afford to attend to classes because of one of the bullet points 'no funds'.

But yes, I will follow both of your suggestions. For now I will learn on my own and after that when I get some funds I will definitely join for classes.

Also i think if you can find a teacher it will be better as he can guide you on your technique as wrong habits can be very hard to change later.

 

Hey pavan, I just bought my guitar today. Am thinking of learning the basics on my own before checking if i need classes.. For the online source,, I downloaded Learn and Master Guitar series. It comes around 8gb and is pretty helpful i hope. Fingers crossed..

Pavan: There is no "1" final answer to your question ... All who have learned to play the guitar have their own set of experiences and are most likely to apply them to you ... "THEY ARE RIGHT" - all of them ... cuz they have their own way and comfortable pattern/structure of learning ... which may not necessarily be applicable to you ...

Bottom line : You have to evaluate your situation yourself ...

let me give you a methodology ... check out some online content you would be comfortable with (this might take a few days but be patient and make sure you go through some sites (say 20-25 sites) and see if anything clicks... i have a link to a site on my blog see if that helps you, many of my friends who i have guided helped learn the guitar have found it really really helpful, but may be you wont .. so try it for yourself and see) ...

incase that doesnt work ... try to find a teacher near by who can take you through some basics .. but make sure you dont stop your search for relevant online material (trust me there's a lot out there)... there will be a point soon when you will have found some sites that you can stick around with for long time...

The key point is knowing what you need to learn next .. and just follow the same methodology as above in any situation u are stuck with and decide ...

This will ensure that you spend money on a teacher only after exhausting your options and yet you can learn a lot despite minimizing expenses ...

You need to decide what sort of person you are ... what interests you and what exactly compelled you towards the guitar.

1. Some ppl have an inborn ear for music (= music is a language to them), and they gravitate towards whichever instrument they were exposed to first. Soon they master most of the instruments they want to (whenever possible).

2. Some ppl love music and thus want to play the music that they love. this also means that there will be some preference towards the particular instrument. (e.g. guitar, because one likes "while my guitar gently weeps" by Beatles)

3. Some ppl just do it for "tashan" = show off. (I believe there is No harm / nothing bad in doing so). In this case, the instrument with most "perceived *** appeal" wins. (Play Hotel California by Eagles on the guitar)


If you belong category 1, then you need to start right from the basics. That means scales, intervals, harmonies, chords, improvisations etc. The good thing is that whether you chose a tutor or not, you will learn fast (otherwise you don't really have the knack)

If you belong to category 2, then you can learn on your own, but it will become like learning by rote. You will learn some chords to songs, but perhaps not understand why these chords are used, and how to improvise upon them. Tutors will help you because learning on own is, strictly speaking, best done by ppl in category 1.

If you belong to category 3, then get hold of a FRIEND who plays guitar. Ask him to teach your the "chords, riffs, licks and tricks" of few songs and play the songs at campfire, and achieve your goal. Tutors will confuse you with their unnecessary blabber.

if you cant afford to get a teacher then find a friend of yours who is good in playing guitar and can guide you well...a little bit of theory is always required ...i remember when i used to learn guitar by myself i used to play an Aminor chord...but wasn't knowing that the chord is actually Aminor...it used to sound good to my ears so i played it...i didnt have an internet connection at that time...that was when i was in grade 7...hehe...i wasted my time ...i dont want you to do the same...many people in youtube give wrong lessons with wrong fingerstyles...no doubt you will end up playing that lick but you wont know what was the logic behind that lick...all the best

No i wouldnt say that it is absolutely necessary to join classes as by joining them you will have to learn at their pace (usually very slow). You can learn at home using some of the great sites (ultimateguitar is a very gud one). I have been teaching myself at home for around 1.5 years now and play as good as my friends taking classes since 3 years.

 

If your friend is taking classes from 3 years then there is definitely sumthing wrong with ur friend or his teacher..Seems like ur friend does not have the desire to learn thats why he is laggin behind...Please dont give sum false random comparision to support ur theory...
